How did you get set up for your birthing classes? I go to my OB on Thursday and I need to REMEMBER to ask her. I really want to do the bradley, so if anyone has any info on how to find classes, I would greatly appreciate it.
I googled Bradley classes in my area. My OB only had info on the hospitals classes. It was about $600 for bradley classes, it was 3 months of Saturdays.
And just in case you didn't know...you have to pay out of pocket for the classes and they're usually a few hundred dollars or more.
i didnt take "bradley" classes, im signed up to take birthing classes - and this isnt true. my insurance is covering it 100%
She asked about "Bradley" this is true for Bradley. You're right in the fact that most hospitals don't charge for their classes or insurance covers it. But again, she asked about Bradley.
They might have classes and/or teachers on their website if that's the type you're specifically looking for. I doubt your OB/hospital will have Bradley classes. We are taken Bradley ones, through our doula and that's how I found them. However, I just noticed that on the website for our nurse midwives we're switching to they have a list of classes and resources, so even if you aren't using one, maybe try looking at websites for ones in your area for ideas.
Thanks ladies, unfortunitly the nearest bradley instructor is an hour away. But I'd only be driving out there once a week, so I will have to talk to DH and see what he thinks (my OB's office is an hour away too). I want to go with bradley because I can not get the epideral, or any other spinal block, so I would really like to try some natural methods of pain management, and I heard GREAT things about the bradley method.
If you can't get an epidural (or for those strongly against them) I think Bradley would be worth it, even with the drive. It's not forever and it's really amazing what tips and tricks you can learn that the hospital or ob will never tell you. (kinda sad, too). Our doula has been certified in all different types of birthing methods (hypno and bradley being two) and thinks, in general, bradley is one of the best, esp for those really needing to avoid drugs and interventions. I would honestly be scared to try a natural birth without something like bradley, just b/c I think you're so much more prepared with it.
And yes, you pay out of pocket for Bradley and other classes like that, it's so not the same as the few hour hospital tour/class thing (which you often have to pay for as well, but it's cheap). Ours I think were around $265 or $290? Can't remember exactly, but those numbers stick out in my head.
You may also want to check to see what your hospital offers - some may have more than just the standard birthing class. Our hospital offers a traditional class and also a 'birthing w/out fear" class that was designed for women who want an unmedicated birth. It's a 2 hour class for 5 weeks, was highly recommended, and is $65.
The one bradley instructor (which isn't teaching b/c she is PG too) had on her site that the cost was $150 for the course. The other one didn't have the cost on her site, so I am still waiting for that info. The classes are 12 weeks so I need to get set up ASAP and start classes because I might not have time to finish the course!
I've been considering the Bradley classes as well. I've heard they are the best for preparing and empowering DH. Since we're first timers, Dh is pretty petrified and normally I'm the calm and collected one so I really need him to be prepared for a role reversal.
I'll be asking my OB on my next visit as well. I like to jot my questions on my appt. cards in my wallet, that's the only way I remember them.
