Cradle Cap or Acne

My DD has bumps on her cheeks and a few on her neck...no flaking or scales...but the Pedi insisted that it was cradle cap. Now I googled this and it definatly looks like acne or a reaction of possibly dairy in my breastmilk but cradle cap never crossed my mind. The Pedi. really made me mad for not only speaking poor english but rushing us out the door. I had a ton of questions, but she was ignoring me while she engrossed herself in the computer. I can see another Pedi but it's through the Navy and there isn't a lot of choices at the clinic that we are enrolled at. Has anyone had these bumps on their DC that were in fact cradle cap?

Re: Cradle Cap or Acne

  • No, sounds like classic acne. My DD had cradle cap AND acne and they looked nothing alike. Cradle cap is "scales", acne is bumps...whacko pedi...sorry.

My pedi recommended using Dove soap on baby acne, we have been and it was cleared up in 2 weeks. It probably just ran it's course; but, we still use the dove b/c we like it and it's gentle on her face.  (we use sensitive dove)

  • typically reactions to food/milk/soy manifest as skin reactions with diarrhea, change in stools (red, black, etc) and or increased fussiness.

I always freak out because my son has really sensitive skin but the dr insists its just baby skin he has had cradel cap (now resolving) acne (finally gone) and now eczema. His poops are fine as is his temperment so i try hard not to panic. sorry I cant be more helpful just wanted to let you know you arent alone in worrying about her skin.

  • My guess is that it's acne -- which is totally normal. Cradle cap is not "pumps" and it typically appears along hair lines -- so scalp and eyebrows -- not cheek and neck.
  • My DS has baby acne, and it sounds like the exact same thing...bumps on cheeks and some on neck.  Our pedi said it will clear up on it's own, but if it gets really bad, they'll prescribe an ointment; we haven't needed that.  His face cleared up in about 2 weeks on it's own.  I've noticed a couple more bumps here and there, but nothing like it was.  I would probably try the other pedi and see if they seem to give you more of the care/attention you're looking for.  Good luck!
