It came up yesterday that breastfed babies are often deficient in vitamin D so it is routinely prescribed to breastfeeding women. I am curious to know how routine it is.
Also, do you know if it was part of a blood test they did on your baby??
In the clinic where I work we go ahead and put EBF infants on a multivitamin supplement (with Vit D in mind). You can get Vitamin D drops themselves, but most people just use the MVI. My son's pedi does the same thing so he is on the MVI too (Polyvisol). I have never tested a child for Vit D unless they had other major medical problems (malabsorption, gut resection, etc).
After 6 months an EBF infant's iron stores are no longer adequate, but since cereal is started by then and it's fortified, we don't worry about iron too much, although it is in the MVI.
At around 2 months DD's pedi asked us to give her Trivisol drops (available OTC at drugstores) on most days of the week. That's what they recommend for EBF babies. At her 6 mo appt they gave us a prescription for a similar multivit that also includes floride.

This.
This...our pedi recommended it to us right off the bat. We use Trivisol, just over the counter...made by enfamil. Our DD really likes it!
