Re-check Blood Pressure

I am beyond frustrated.

My BP is still high.  Not as high as it was on Wednesday but still much too high.  As soon as she read it, she sent me in another room and checked my info on the computer and was like, "you need to see a doctor"  ...."yea, you definitely need to see a doctor."  I seriously, started tearing up.

I feel like nothing can go right.  First the hypermesis, then the heartburn and now the high BP.  And the high BP really freaks me out because of what it can mean/lead to.  I'm frustrated and scared all rolled into one.

Lately I have been wondering if I went through infertility because I am not made to be pregnant and that is why I am having so many problems.  I never thought this pregnancy journey would be this hard...and I feel so alone in it (not that DH and my family and friends and Nesties aren't there for me but I feel alone in my feelings...and just alone in what this all really does to me).

And then I feel guilty...because I am so happy to be pregnant and so excited to meet peanut and I know that things could be worse...much worse and that makes me feel incredibly guilty...it is just that everything is so overwhelming.

I'm just frustrated.  My appt. with the doctor is next Friday.  Hopefully he will have some good news for me.

Re: Re-check Blood Pressure

  • Boy, Heather... you sure have been dealing with alot! I am sure the stress of thinking about it all doesn't help your BP either!?

Have you tried doing anything to bring down your BP besides "taking it easy"? Like essential oils? Baths? Nightly massages from your DH? Prenatal Yoga??

I hate to say it, but high sodium intake can be bad for your BP.. you might want to limit those pickles :( (I know...sad thought!)?

I thought this list had some good ideas:

  • I have been doing things to keep my BP down...actually always have because it runs in my family...But I have always had low bp.  But since becoming pregnant, I have been trying.

I probably should cut out/limit the pickles.

I take a bath nearly every night..it tends to be the only thing that makes me feel a little better when I am sick.

DH does give me a rub every day..whenever I ask.  He has been really great through all of this.

Prenatal yoga is a good idea.  Maybe I should pick up a DVD.  I love yoga!

I have been going on walks (as much as my body allows) every day.

I think I will definitely be checking out that yoga.  Thanks for the tip.

  • the list suggests Lemon balm and Lavendar essential oils in your bath. If you don't want to spend all day in the bathtub, maybe you could carry the oils with you and take a sniff while you take a moment to meditate throughout your day.?

another good tip!  I am kind of afraid to put stuff in my baths because of infections (UTIs and stuff) but I can sniff!

  • I'd ask your OB if you can have them in your baths... I know it was recommended to me by mine when I was sick! And the lemon is also good for m/s.?
  • Heather,

Did I read this correctly?  It sounds like you have high bp and they are waiting a week for you to see a doctor?  That does not sound right.  If it was high at your last appointment and is still high, they should be doing something now, not waiting for it to get worse (ie develop other symptoms).

I developed high bp at 30 weeks and started bp meds right away. I was also put on bedrest (which you're already doing) and checked my bp at home 3 times a day.  I was monitored twice a week until the end of my pregnancy.

I hope they don't just wait this out.  There are things they can do to help you now before it has a chance to progress.

    Sending good thoughts your way.

  • Interesting!  I didn't know that about the m/s!

Friday was the soonest appt they had. =(

My mom has a bp cuff at home, so I am going to monitor it everyday and write it down for the doc for that appt.

  • I'm so sorry! ?I really thought it was going to be just a fluke. ?I hope the essential oils and yoga help!
  • I'm sorry your bp is still high.
  • Good luck, Heather... hypertension is nothing to mess around with!

One suggestion... keep track of your position when you check your BP... either take it both sitting and standing *or* just make a note of if you're sitting or standing when you take it... it does make a difference.

If they're willing to let you wait a week for an appointment, it can't be TOO bad... if it were serious, they'd find room for you ASAP. There are lots of easy meds they can always put you on, that are totally safe for baby and have very minimal side effects for you.

Let me know if you want any tricks for a low-sodium diet. I have a few suggestions I can pass on! (((HUGS)))

  • I don't have any advice - just sympathy.  You'd think that you'd be able to catch a break. I mean after all that you've gone through?

As far as blood pressure and stress, there's a whole school of learning on a topic called "Heart-Math".  It's basically a combination of breathing techniques, positive visualization, and re-focusing your energies.  It's really been very helpful in my life and you can actually see/feel the difference after using the techniques. (Basicially the head and heart are connected.  The head sends signals to the heart and the heart sends signals to the brain.  When you focus on your heart and the area around your heart, you are able to influence the messages that the heart is sending to the brain.  I know it sounds a little bit "out there" but it truly works.)   If you want, I can walk you through the steps.  I used it everytime I went to the OB during my PG with Ryan because my blood pressure was also high...but I had no other symptoms of pre-e.  No protein, no diabetes, etc.

Nobody said life would be easy, they just promised it would be worth it.

  • Heather - you're at Kaiser Santa Teresa, right? My friend took the prenatal yoga class there and RAVED about it. The ladies all sit around and talk about a certain pregnancy or baby related topic for awhile, and then do yoga. She said it was like a support group.

Also, are you nervous right before your appointments? If so, that could be affecting your bp too. Definitely check it using your mom's bp cuff when you're relaxed and not thinking about anything stressful or worrying about anything. I hope it improves soon!
