pumping before nursing??

It seems like most women that do both, nurse then pump. Is this just preference or is there a reason most do it in this order?  I always pump , then nurse DS.  My supply is not so great, and if I reverse it then I get hardly anything from the pump.   Doing it this way it seems like he can still get a lot out of me , plus it's the hind milk which is good.

Just checking to make sure it doesn't really make a difference.

Re: pumping before nursing??

  • I don't know a for sure answer, but I was told to nurse and then pump or my lo won't get enough when eating-then again, I have supply issues and my little one is a "lazy" eater.  When I pump after nursing I only get 1-2 oz, if I pumped first would my lo only get 1-2 oz?  That's not enough.  I know you're never empty, but with a lazy sucker, he would give up.  (and we had weight gain issues)

  • I would nurse then pump to ensure that your LO is getting enough milk, especially if your supply isn't great.  As your LO gets older and your supply gets regulated, you will start to pump more and will be able to build up more of a stash, which it sounds like you want to do.  Is there a reason you need to build a stash now?  If you're concerned about going back to work at some point, you will probably be able to pump enough during the day while you're away from your DS to feed him the following day.  You could also try pumping after the first morning nursing when you usually have the most milk, or after your DS goes to bed at night.
  • I've always heard nurse first then pump. Baby is more efficient at getting milk and more efficient at stimulating you to make more milk than the pump is. So the best way to build your supply is nurse nurse nurse nurse nurse. I'm almost 3 weeks out and also am a little anxious about building a good stash before I go back to work in a month, but I'd rather establish a great supply now and worry about the stash in another two weeks or so. I do pump some, so H can give the baby a bottle, and so he'll be used to bottles, but I've noticed in the past week that he has been nursing like crazy and I really think my supply has jumped. Good luck! Oh, also, if you pump after you nurse then feed him that he'll still get the good hindmilk that way. That's what we do here, but again, haven't started worrying about a freezer stash yet....
  • I pump in between feedings, so it's usually an hour before I feed dd.  The only time I pump right before feeding dd is when I am engorged and she won't be able to latch if I don't get some out.
