Why pelvic exam and not a beta?

I know I'll probably shouldn't be asking this, but humor me please. I searched on Google, but all it came up with was a bunch of teenagers asking if they could be pregnant. Not exactly what I feel like reading right now.

So this round I had a confirmed ovulation, have been testing negative since 10dpo and still am missing AF. My temps are still high and have no signs that she's on her way (officially due tomorrow).

I called my RE today since he likes to hear from you by CD 33 if your cycle hasn't happened by then. (I Od on CD20.) They said to keep testing this weekend if I don't start before. Ok I understand that.

But the other part that I don't understand is - they said if I don't get AF by Monday, then Tuesday they will have me come in for a pelvic exam. They never mentioned a beta.

Can you tell me why they would do a pelvic exam instead of a beta? I apologize again for asking a dumb question. This is a new RE for me and my old RE never did this/never even mentioned it.

Thanks.

Re: Why pelvic exam and not a beta?

  • My guess is that if you had a confirmed ovulation but no AF, they are worried about an ectopic - and thus, the pelvic exam.  I'm sure they'll do a urine test for pregnancy too, but they'll be looking for abdominal tenderness during the exam.  I say this because it happened to me.  I went in and got a urine preg test, an exam and a pelvic ultrasound.

Hopefully all of this will be a moot point.  Best of luck getting your bfp!

  • Thank you very much anna2006. That's kind of what I was worried about but wasn't sure.
