So yesterday I woke up all achy, a stuffy nose, sore throat?.just awful! So I called my Dr. to ask her what I should take. She tells me to take Tylenol cold & flu every 6 hours and if I don?t feel better by Monday to give her a call. So I called my husband and asked him to pick some up for me at the store on his way home from work. He was hesitant on buying me this medicine as was I. As both him and I understood, I should only be taking regular Tylenol when pregnant. So he asked the pharmacy and she told him NO?.that I should NOT take the Tylenol cold & flu as it can cause birth defects etc. So why would my Dr. tell me it?s okay to take?? This makes me really upset!!! I decided to just take the regular Tylenol, drink lots of fluids, and get plenty of rest?..I still feel pretty crappy today. My question is??I was wondering......have any of you ever been told that it?s okay to take the Tylenol Cold & Flu or ever taken it while pregnant? I may be over reacting, but this is my first baby and it makes me a little pissed at my DR. (which I will be bringing to her attention at my next appointment).
TIA for whatever feedback you can give.
Re: Tylenol Cold & Flu Question?
What are the different ingredients in Tylenol C&F as opposed to regular Tylenol?
I'd trust my doctor over a pharmacy tech, but that's just me...
Depends on the product... which product did your hubby get? (There is Tylenol Cold & Flu nighttime, Tylenol Cold & Flu Severe Daytime and Tylenol Cold & Flu Severe Nighttime).
FWIW she didnt say the pharmacy tech told her husband... she said the "pharmacy". Pharmacy technicians are legally not allowed to get recommendations.
The "Severe Nighttime" product has the most ingredients in it so I will tell you about the safety of each of those ingredients... the Doxylamine is pregnancy category B (google it if you dont know what it means). Pseudoephedrine is a category C. Similar drugs have been associated with minor malformations in some animal species; however, human teratogenesis has not been suspected based on limited epidemiologic evidence. Use of pseudoephedrine during pregnancy should be avoided unless the potential benefits outweigh the unknown potential risks to the fetus. Dextromethorphan is also pregnancy category C. The majority of animal studies have not found teratogenic effects. The results suggested that the use of dextromethorphan during pregnancy does not pose a risk to the fetus; however, due to the small sample size, an increased risk of rare malformations could not be ruled out.
I would recommend continuing to do what you are doing- lots of fluids & rest and plain Tylenol. If your symptoms are bad enough and you think you may want to use the Cold & Flu product you should talk to your doctor about the posed risks first, for yours & your husbands comfort.
