Babies: 9 - 12 Months

How much does your 6mo old nurse/drink now that they are eating more solids?

DD has never been a big drinker, but since she has started eating more solids at night, she hasn't been nursing as much in the morning.

Is this just the way it is? Solids start taking over? We haven't started solids for breakfast quite yet because I want her to still drink her bottles at daycare.

She averages 12 oz(bm) at daycare (8:30-5).

I am curious about your experiences.

Also, Are you still pumping as often if they are not eating as much?

  • I've been wondering the same thing.  DD used to drink a 5 1/2 oz. bottle every 3 hours...she is now down to 3 1/2 - 4 oz. every three hours.  She eats a container of fruit in the morning and a container of veggies in the afternoon.

  • I've been wondering about this too.  DS eats two decent sized solid meals a day (3 Tbsp of cereal with 2 oz of veggies for each meal).  In the last three weeks, I've noticed that I'm pumping about 1 oz less each session.  I think DS is just drinking less and eating more instead.

I agree that Pedis suggest prioritizing BM intake.  My DS is a chunk (20+ lbs), so I haven't been stressing over it.

  • I made sure that daycare knew that she is ONLY to have solids after a bottle and I don't care if she gets her solids at 3:00. She has to have a bottle first and have had a good amount before she gets her solids.

  • it is kinda confusing.  pedi stressed that formula/BM is to be the MAIN source of nutrition still at this age.  solids are only supposed to be a supplement.  having said that, pedi also said not to be too surprised if LO starts taking less formula/BM when they hit the 3 "meals" a day.
  • When DS was 6 months old he ate 2 meals a day
