3rd Trimester

F/U to work post yesterday- semi long

So a few people were semi-flaming me for saying I was "bummed" about being told I still have my job..

Here is the follow up conversation I had with my boss.. Maybe after reading this you will see WHY I am upset with them.

We discussed my maternity leave, guessing around the week I will be out.. I get a total of 6 weeks from the regular maternity leave, I also get an additional 12 weeks from the state as part of FLMA... SO I mentioned that I would be out from about the last week of June till about November.

My boss "suggests" to me.. well, why don't we do this.. you take your 6 weeks then take 6 weeks of the FLMA and save the other 6 weeks for when we get slow here again. Because right now we are busy enough to keep you, but I know in December we are probably going to slow down and may not need you.. so if you save your leave time, You can just take it then when were slow so we don't have to lay you off.

THIS is why I am angry with them, they want me to split my leave to benefit THEM. I find it wrong of them to ask me to cut my time, so they don't have to pay me when it gets slow here.

After talking with DH last night, he agree's with me. He said I am entitled to take my leave whenever I see fit, and if I choose to stay out until November that is MY choice.  And if the company is not in a position to take me back at that point, they should pay me un-employment instead of forcing me to use my own time on their schedule.

  • Can they even ask you to do that legally?

  • I completely agree with you 100%. It is YOU'RE time. you should take it when you can not when is good for them. you dont owe these people anything. and imo James will only bill tiny like that for a short time, so spend while you can with him as much as you can..

Probaly not. I would think that they are just trying to push you into it.. you know? Or make their "helpful" suggestions.

  • It's not. My husband is mad that they even suggested it to me. Frankly the company isn't doing great, I know that. But I am one of the least paid people here and I do ALOT of things for them. I haven't gotten a raise in almost 2 years and they hired someone after me who makes double my salary and doesn't do HALF my work.

I was told 2 months ago my job was being either cut to part time or I was being laid off.  I was told yesterday they want to keep me, but I have to work every other weekend, up until I leave for maternity leave.. and it was SUGGESTED for me to save half my leave time for when it gets slow here again.  I am not. I am taking my entitled leave and if they can't afford to hire me back when I am done, they can pay me un-employment.

This is why I am so "over" this place.

  • Obvioulsy, its SUGGESTED as you stated.  You don't have to do it, so just don't do it.  Take your time as you see fit.

agreed.  take it as you see fit.  doesn't sound legal.  i do think your OP sounded strange and I had a hard time feeling for you ~ but it does sound like you will eventually be laid off anyway in december ~ would you look for a new job or be a stay at home mom?  this might work in your favor financially...

I would like to be a SAHM for a little while. DH and I decided to stay with my parents for another year once I was told I was being laid off. So financially it works out for me to be on unemployment for a while instead of paying for daycare. I do have full intentions of going back to work eventually. But if I can take 9 months off with my son, I would like to.
