How did you ween from the shield?

DS is only 3wks, is it possible to ween at this age?

I'm frustrated with the shield!

Re: How did you ween from the shield?

  • we stopped when ds wasa month. I think it was a combo of me being more confident and him being stronger.  I would just try feeding without the shield and if it didn't work I'd use the sheild.  Good Luck!

  • I couldn't wean until 3 months.  I just tried every once in a while to see if he would nurse without it and he always got really frustrated.  Eventually around 3 months he finally went without it and then there was no turning back.

Try not to be frustrated with it. Shield or no shield it is great that you are nursing especially if DC is content while nursing and doing a good job eating.  Be patient and your little one will wean themself.

  • I didn't.  DD nursed for a year with it, and every time I tried it without, she flipped out, and wouldn't latch at all.  So it was kind of a pain at first, but I got used to and that was just how we nursed.  It didn't impact my supply in the least, and I never needed to use formula for her.

Don't stress about weaning him off of it just yet.  Try every now and then, and he'll probably do it eventually.  GL!

  • I started BF with DD at the hospital with the shield because the nurses told me that because my nipple was flat and it was the only way DD could latch on so that I could try to get the hang of BF.

But after I got discharged from the hospital and had an appointment with the LC, she had me show her how I would latch DD and after showing me another way to have DD latch, she told me I didn't need the shield because my nipples were fine.

I've been BF her during the day when I can and the last week I told DH that I don't know if its because she's on my nipples too long or she's using it as a paci after she's really full because it gets to the point where it hurts so I decided to go ahead and go back to using the shield.

I think it really depends on you. Whatever you're comfortable with and however your baby will be comfortable. It doesn't hurt their feedings either way because they'll still get your milk.

Thanks for this post, I am thinking about weaning as well.  I'm afraid of the pain though...

My DS is only 3 months, but so far we're having the same experience.

  • I am also frustrated with the shield.  I have a horrible time keeping it on.  I do not know what I am doing wrong.  I am able to nurse 3-4 times a day with the shield and I pump afterwards.  I pump the remaining times during the day.

Ditto this. Although DS weaned around 2 months.  I was frustrated with using the shield and frustrated that DS wouldn't latch without it.  I finally just calmed down about the whole thing and realized that at least I was happy that I was still nursing.  Honestly, I barely remember those days now.  Hang in there and just take it slowly...

  • I agree with the previous posters - I just tried some feedings without the shield to see if she'd nurse. If she did, great! If not, we used the shield and didn't make a big deal. I also tried to start a feeding with the shield and then remove it after a minute or two (when my nipple was good and stretched out - sorry, a little TMI) and offer it to her again. Most often, that was successful. Then we got to a point where she was jerking around and knocking the shield off - I finally got the message that she was ready to be done.
