Breastfeeding

Latching taking a while...

It is taking DD up to 10 minutes to latch on and hold it at each feeding.

She'll latch on no problem, but then she'll suck a couple of times and let go, and this goes on and on for a while until finally she'll latch and hold it and start to really feed.

I have no clue why she's doing this?  The only thing I can think of is that maybe my let down is too much for her, because in between latching milk is literally dripping from me and both her and I are covered in milk!  Any suggestions on fixing this?  Or if it's not my let down anyone know what else it might be?

  • My baby does this sometimes too. It seems worse when my breasts are engorged/hard - he has a hard time getting hold of them. I have fairly small nipples that are sort of flat, so I help him out by kind of pinching them and making them as big as possible. I also sort of grasp the breast and hold it out to make the aerola/nipple poke out further. Sometimes that helps. How often does she eat? Have you noticed the problem when your breasts are more empty and softer?

She's eating every 3 hours.  It's a problem every time we feed, regardless of if I'm softer or not, so I don't think it's engorgement.

  • It may be your letdown then - sometimes my son will kind of sputter on the milk and like you said, it will be sort of dripping all over him and me. Not sure how to correct it though; he and I just work through it. Maybe as they get older they'll be able to handle the flow better?
  • you could try draining some of your milk in a towel first and then latch again.

also consider changing your positions during feeding.
