3rd Trimester

First trip to L&D yesterday at 27w6d...

Tuesday and yesterday I had noticed a huge decrease in the amount of movement I was feeling.  I was trying not to worry about it but when it coupled with LOTS of Braxton-Hicks contractions yesterday afternoon, I decided to call the midwife on call and see what she thought.  I figured she was just going to laugh and tell me to relax, but she told me to go ahead and go to L&D to be monitored!

Baby was fine and started kicking a lot as soon as we were hooked up to the monitor, but I was having some pretty severe contractions.  I ended up needing a shot of brethine/terbutaline.  They kept me on the monitor for almost two hours...and checked my cervix (ouch!) but it was "tightly closed".  Anyway, it was kind of scary and I don't know what to expect next.  I guess I will discuss it with my MW at my regular appointment next week.  I hope baby decides to stay in for a LONG time!

Anyone have a similar experience?  I'm wondering how common this is.

  • Sorry hun! Yes, I have been to L&D twice for similar reasons. See my siggie. Did they do a Fetal Fibronectin test?

  • I've been on bedrest since 24wks for PTL. I take oral terb to keep the bh/contractions to a minimum. Thank goodness my cervix is holding up. There's quite a few girls on the high risk board that are going through the same thing.

  • I was admitted to L&D overnight for the same reason at 24 weeks.  Now, I'm on my 5th week of bedrest.  The terbutaline shot didn't stop my contractions at all, but I've been taking Procardia and I haven't had contractions since.  Your doc will probably put you on bedrest and maybe prescribe medication (most likely Procardia).  Hang in there and good luck!  Ask for a fetal fibronectin test if your doc doesn't offer it to you first.
  • It's scary isn't it?

I made my first trip to L&D around the same time as you (almost 28 weeks) and I was back at 32 weeks.  Now, my cervix is soft, slightly dilated and 50% effaced, I'm on restricted activity, and on Procardia for the contractions.

  • I had to go to L&D for some pretty bad cramping at 20 weeks. They gave me the same shot and monitored me for about 2 hours also. I was put on pelvic rest till 34 weeks and told to rest as much as possible. Luckily, the cramps went away after a couple of days and I haven't had any problems since then.

No, I don't believe they did.  What does that test do?

  • I went to L&D for this very same thing at 25w5d.  It is very scary!  I was having contractions every 3-5 min so they gave me a shot of Terb. to stop them.  I've been on oral Terb ever since and moderate bedrest.  Doc is taking me off both the meds and bedrest in one week!! Hang in there girl!!  Drink lots of water and be sure to empty your bladder often!
