Big u/s myth?

I was told the other day to drink OJ (or something with alot of sugar) an hour before the big u/s, has anyone else done this? and is there any fact behind it?

Re: Big u/s myth?

  • I know a lot of women do this- drink juice, eat a candy bar, etc.  I would do it- and I plan to before our u/s.  I can definately feel baby moving a lot more after I enjoy a sweet treat.

  • Well, the idea is that the sugar will make the baby move around more during the u/s.  However, while it's good to see the baby move, if s/he is moving too much, they may not be able to get the measurements they need.

It usually works, just be careful not to over-do it, I guess.

  • I didn't... but OJ does always make my little guy jump around.  I know there are a lot of people that did this to make their babies more active - just be careful, if he/she is too active the radiologist won't be able to get the needed shots!
  • A lot of bumpies do it I am planning on it, I think with the oj its actually the viatmin C. I probably would stay away from sugar overload though I tend t crash hard when I have too much sugar.
  • I think it's hit or miss because this can really backfire on you too.  My co-worker drank OJ before hers and the baby was TOO active to be able to tell the gender.  I always noticed my DD moving a lot after I eat fruit so I ate soem before my sonogram and she was not moving at all so I think it all depends on if the baby wants to be stubborn or not.  GL!
  • I, too, was told this same thing.  I think the premise is that the baby will "perk up" due to the extra sugar/caffeine (if you drink a coke or something) and will be more active.  ???  Don't know how much truth there is to this... I drank a coke about 30 min prior to my u/s yesterday and she was moving quite a bit.  Not sure if the coke had anything to do with it, though.

  • I have tried this but it didn't help matters. Because we were unable to get the money shot during other ultrasounds. However, yesterday, I had big US #2 at 3 pm, so I had already had lunch and did not eat or drink (not including water) beforehand and we were able to see that she is a girl. So from my experience it did not help to drink OJ or eat sugar or anything before.

  • It makes sense but it would mess with the ultrasound and the tech being able to do her thing.  Think of it this way too...the harder it is for the tech to get the images the longer you are gonna have to sit there with a full bladder.   Not fun!  And you may not find out the sex if baby doesn't cooperate.

  • I didn't do anything like that before mine, but apparently it makes the baby more active so you have a better chance of getting your "money shot," if that's what you are aiming for. My cousin also said her OB told her to eat a candy bar before her big U/S to get the baby moving, HTH!!!

  • I ate breakfast which included OJ about an hour before the u/s and the baby was sleeping. Just because he/she doens't move much doesn't mean you can see anything/everything you need to. More often the opposite can be true, imo.
  • My Ob told me to eat a small meal and drink something sweet (oj, sprite)an hour before the big u/s. I had some toaster waffles and a can of sprite. She said that they want a full baby (to make sure they are eating in there too) and hungry babies tend to lay there. Not sure how true this is or not. She did move around in there, but just kept flipping back and forth, and wouldnt take her hand away from her face. Finally after an hour of laying there she took her hand away for a few seconds and we got the shot of her nose and things to make sure everything was going good. We did not get a money shot on the big u/s. She was too curled up and content in there to move her legs. Since my DH had to know what the sex is, I paid for an elective u/s and on the 2 hour ride down there I slammed a dew. She moved pretty good then and we got the money shot. Still wouldnt keep her hand away from her face as you can see in my siggy. To each their own I guess!

Yup, I'd not drink a lot of sugar/juice and bring some with you. That way in case you needa  little more movement you can drink a little, but if you drink too much you're screwed.

  • I had breakfast with orange juice yesterday, about 30 minutes before my ultrasound appointment. It definitely got my baby moving. We were clearly able to see everything, and found out that we're having a girl! I think the amount of movement depends on each individual baby. I have fruit juice every morning with breakfast, so she probably knows what's coming, and doesn't get too excited.

  • I read this and had people who had babies to do this, so I drank a bottle of oj before.  Well, the tech couldn't get all the shots needed, so he asked me to go to the bathroom.  My bladder was too full.  Even after going, he did not get all the shots and I had to go back in a week.
  • i just had oatmeal before, and my little guy was still moving around a lot.
  • I've never heard to drink juice, etc. When I had my first ultrasound the baby moved a few times and I had eaten breakfast like 2 hours before.  I have another U/S next Thursday so maybe I will try this!  I just can't wait to feel it move for the first few times and to actually have a belly!
