Well, I think all-in-all, it's the best news we could have hoped for:
1) Unofficially, the report says that there wasn't any mal-rotation or twisting of his intestines. Everything looks good from that perspective. (whohoo!) The nurse felt bad because he threw up his Barium all over himself, poor guy.
2) During the test, they let him drink some of the Barium to do a swallow study and upper GI study all in one test. They didn't indicate any abnormalities in swallowing or any sign of aspiration. Both really good news.
The doctor said he has "high level reflux." This isn't abnormal for preemies (about half of preemies have it - - much worse than term babies because their spinctor (sp?) muscle isn't developed fully.) They were surprised with Andrew because while he was showing signs of some reflux, it didn't appear to be that bad, so he must be good at hiding it. The nurse had mentioned before that she was curious though, because he made so many "yucky" faces when eating.
During rounds today, the doctors are going to talk about the following:
1) Putting him on Prilosec (sp?) for reflux - - about 50% of preemies have to be on it for high level reflux -- they said if the reflex was affecting his desire to eat, they would start to notice a difference in a few days and the medicine would work well in about a week. They would hope that this would show a big improvement in his eating. If not, they would redo the swallow study to see if they see any changes...(lack of eating could be yet another issue)...I hope that this is his problem and will solve why he won't eat.
2) They will continue to work with speech therapy and talk today about when to try an on-demand schedule
Last night Andrew didn't eat much...he took about 25% of feeds.
Thank you for your continued T&P. Please pray that this is the only issue - something that's easily fixed - so we can go home with our healthy little dude.
Re: the results are in.
BFP #2 11/4/12 EDD 7/20/12 missed M/C 12/13/12 @8w5d D&C 12/21/12
DX 2/7/13 with an alloimmunity + for anti-paternal antibodies started Lovenox daily & BA
BFP 2/16/13 EDD 10/28/13
He does both of those things! I guess they just didn't think it was "that bad" because his signs weren't as extreme as most of the preemies that have it...poor guy...I wish they'd run the test 6 weeks ago, but things are always clearer in retrospect. Oh well!
What a relief that there are no problems requiring surgery!!
I hope the Prilosec is able to help, and he's able to come home soon!!
I hear ya. Haley was 2 months when we finally got a diagnosis and got her on meds. We dealt with an uncomfortable, projectile spitting baby for over a month before we were able to get things under control. And she was not really fully treated without symtpoms until she was around 4 months old. I really hope that the Prilosec does the trick.
Joseph Henry was born at home on March 9, 2009
Nora Mae was born at home on October 30, 2011
Obviously, Jackson wasn't a preemie, but he was on Prilosec from 6 weeks old to 6 months old. It was a godsend for us. I think we saw improvement w/in a few days.
When he didn't have the prilosec and we were trying different formulas (ended up on hypoallergenic), he would scream, act hungry, we'd give him a bottle, he drink some of it, barf, scream some more, act hungry, refuse the bottle, scream some more... it was miserable.
I'll hope that the Prilosec makes a difference, because all in all, it's a relatively easy fix!
