1st Trimester

Need ideas for my Mom.

My mom told me over the weekend that she wants to be called "Nana". I HATE it with a passion. It reminds me of the dog from Peter Pan. If she's absolutely in love with it, I won't say a word. However, I'm hoping you ladies can help me come up with a couple of other good ones to suggest.

I know Grandma, Mimi, and MawMaw...what else is out there?

Re: Need ideas for my Mom.

  • My mom goes as Nanny with my niece and nephew and I hated it in the beginning b/c well it reminded me of a Nanny, but it has totally grown on me...my grandmom is called Mom-Mom, and now that she is a great grandmom she goes by G-G (Love it!)...

  • When my sister was PG with her first (first grandchild too) my mom didn't want to be called Grandma. So she looked up all the different forms of Grandma from other countries and what not.

She ended up picking Lola which is what they call Grandma in the Philipene's I think it was. At first I hated it and told her my kids will not call her that but I actually like it now and it will stick forever.

I don't like Nana either. If I were you I would just tell your mom that you really don't like it and see if you can decide on something you both like.

  • I call my grandmother Gram.  There is also Granny.
  • My Mom likes "Grammie" best and I'm not really a fan of that. I also have a Memere (it's French and is said like "Mem-Air"). I once saw a grandmother sweatshirt with "Nano" on it. I thought that was funny.

    I called my grandmother, Mere...

  • "Nana" is typically a British thing. Is that your bkgnd? We are, and my grandmother is Nana. My mom can't be Nana, b/c there already is one so we have to think of something else.

There are lots of other options Granny, Grandma "Annie", Oma (German/Dutch), Nonna (Italian), GG (Grandma "Gayle"), Nannie, etc.

If she really has her heart set on it though, I would just let her have it. But that's me. Spend a couple months seeing if you could get used to it. If you find afterwards it's going to burn you everytime you hear it than try something else. GL.

  • My friend's family is of German descent and they call her Mom Oma and her Dad Opa.  It's different but still not too weird.

  • My DS calls my mother Mom-Mom and my MIL Grandma.  I called my grandmother Gram...

My mom will continue to go by Mom-Mom with all the babies to come as well.

**I had a Nona too...that was my great grandmother.

  • My mom is Mocca (Grandma Becca), MIL is Nana. My g-ma is Mamaw. All kids pick what they want. All grandparents want certain names, it doesn't always work out that way...
  • I kinda like Oma. I wonder if she would go for that. I also love "GG" for great grandma. That's pretty cute.
  • My mom will be grandma.  My MIL is Polish and has a grandchild so she's already Babchia, which is pronounced "Bob-chee", but NOT by our nephew who is 3 1/2 and still calls her "Ba-key"  anyway, I thinks it's really difficult for a child to use, but she insists.

  • I hate MaMaw similarly, and there is no way in heck i would let my kids use it (personally). They will probably say grandma and/or the equivilent in one of the other languages they will speak (Mandarin (nainai, waipo) & Hindi (daadi, naani) depending on paternal/maternal)
  • i like nana, but it sort of sounds like she's the nanny..

i got lucky, one grandma is being called "grandma" and the other is being called "babcia" since she's polish :) problemo solved.

  • My Mom wanted to be "Grandmum" which we don't love.  We've been easing into using Grandma instead and plan to teach DS this...all of my siblings are on board with their kids and my nephew already is calling her Grandma and I think she might just get used to it and give up the Grandmum thing.
  • I used to call my grandma "ela" (pronounced like bella, but without the b) b/c it was easier that "abuela" (grandma in spanish).
  • We called both of our moms grandma in front of our daughter and figured whatever she called them when she first started to speak would be what she used.  She started calling them "memaw" so we let her keep it.  I don't love it, but I figure she will only use it while she is little and then start using grandma.

We did the same thing for the grandpas and she calls them papa.

  • My maternal grandmother was Mamaw and my paternal was Grama. My mom is going to grama or mamaw....whatever the kid wants to call her. Granny is out of the question, as I'm sure she would murder my child. LOL.

My nephew calls whatever grandmother he's currently visiting Mamaw and the other one Nudder Mamaw. He calls his great grandpa "Boobie Papaw" and noooooooo one knows why. It's stuck in that side of he family though! It's kind of funny.

  • You can teach your child whatever name you want, but most likely he or she will come up with his or her own name for your parents.

For example, my niece calls her grandparents Nonnie and Boompa, and my little cousin calls my grandparents Gamma and Crappa. haha. At least Nana is better than Crappa!

  • My mom has said she wants to be called Grams.

  • We are using Oma for my mom - its german.
  • My mom wants to be called Grammy :)
