Moms of Boys with diaper rash

What's the best thing you've tried to clear up diaper rash? DS is teething and has a rash (maybe TMI) from under his scrotum to his anus and it's red and almost breaking open. I've been putting Desitin on it and vitamin E but it's not getting better. I've tried diaper-less bum time exposed to the air but he's on the move and piddles everywhere like a puppy and its short-lived.

Any suggestions?

TIA

  • I actually cake on tons of aquafor and that always clears it up.

  • DS got really bad diaper rash one time... very randomly. We used Boudros Butt Paste and the next morning it was completely gone. I use MD Moms Baby Silk every night as a precautionary cream. His day care also uses Butt Paste when they see redness as more of a precautionary.

  • Does desitin have zinc in it?  Maybe try another cream or aquaphor.

  • Oh, and make sure his bum is completely dry before you put any cream on there.  And cake it on.  The more the better.

  • Poor little guy!  :(  We've had success with using lots of A&D, but I'm sure that Aquaphor or Vaseline will be the same type of thing.  We've also tried Triple Paste and that seems to work too.  (We tried Desitin and Butt Paste and they didn't seem to help for us.)

  • Sure it isn't an infection?  DS had something similar on is butt when he went to his 6 month APPT on monday.  Turns out he has a strain of Strep on his butt.  He's now on antibiotics for it.  His Pedi pointed out that his butt right around his hole was really read with lots of little prickly bumps right outside of it.
  • Wash and dry with a cool hair dryer after every poop, and/or every AM and PM. Then use Triple Paste cream. We started with the smaller tube because it is $$$. When we moved to the big tub, it lasted me 4 months of daily use. So worth it!?

EDIT: We also use cloth wipes (thin washcloths) with water to cut down on the irritation.?

  • We once had a diaper rahs that wouldnt go away. It turned out it was fungal so the over the counter creams were not doing the trick. We had to get a prescibed cream call nystatin. It worked immediately. GL!

  • I use Desitin, that always works for me.
  • I like Pink sav (all one word)-pinxsav, it works great and has been around for a long time.
  • If what you're doing isn't working I would try something different. We use California Baby diaper rash cream. We also let him crawl around naked when he starts to get a rash. Yes, he pees everywhere, but we just clean it up and let him air out for an hour or so.?

What you describe sounds really bad and painful. I would see the doc just to make sure it is diaper rash and that it hasn't gotten infected.?

  • We use A&D Gold ointment because Spidey gets bad reactions to the zinc in the regular diaper creams.
  • When my son has diaper rash that bad, I buy the Avenno bath tub soak and I have him sit in the tub and just soak in it for a good 15 minutes. Then I let him get the air a little bit by leaving his diaper off and I just let him run around. Be sure to dry him off really good after his tubby and put a ton of diaper rash cream on him. I like the Aveeno diaper rash cream. That's really all you can do for now. Put the diaper rash cream on him at every diaper change.
  • When DS had a diaper rash that wouldn't clear up, our pedi said to use athlete's foot cream on it.  It worked.

We now use California Baby diaper cream- it has the least amount of crap in it and I like the smell.

  • OMG THIS STUFF WORKED AMAZINGLY! So my Pedi told me to use an Anti FUngal Cream called Lotrimen AF no 3x a day....and Domeboro Astringent Solution. Domeboro is a powder and you mix it w/water (according to the box) and put a little washcloth in it and put it over his little butt and keep it in his diaper for 30 min, 2x a day. Along w/Balmex. Cleared up a TERRIBLE diaper rash in 2 1/2 days! Crazy! Its all over the counter! And I'm keeping all thats stuff on stock forever now!
