I am starting my 2nd IVF cycle and my CD3 blood came back with an FSH of 12. The nurse called me and told me to make an appt with my RE - but I can't get in to see him til the end of the month.
I am really freaking out. Will this have any effect on my cycle?

Re: High FSH success stories, please
I had my FSH tested three times and it was 13.3, 12.9 and the cycle we conceived it was 13.2. I did IUI with injectables, only because my insurance mandated two IUIs before moving to IVF, and we were very, very lucky that the first one was a success.
When I was first diagnosed my RE said that high FSH doesn't mean you can't conceive (especially at the level mine, and yours, is at) but it might mean it takes longer to conceive or that you won't produce as many eggs. They say an average woman would get 10-15 eggs with IVF and he said I'd be lucky to get half of that.
But the thing he always stressed to me was quality over quantity. And a friend of mine knew a woman who had a very low FSH who just couldn't produce a good egg even though she had plenty of them in each cycle. Age is also a huge factor. I'm 28 and while I only had an AFC of 8 when I started my IUI cycle, you need to remember that it only takes one egg to make a baby.
As for how your FSH might affect your cycle, they might start you on a higher dose of meds and you might end up needing to stim longer, but that's not always the case. The good thing is they will monitor you closely so they can adjust the meds as needed. The good thing is that high FSH generally means you don't need to worry about OHSS, which is the silver lining I held onto once I got the diagnosis.
Hang in there. It's a scary thing to be told you have high FSH but there are plenty of success stories. I know there's also a check-in on TTTC if you want to talk to others dealing with the same issue. GL!!
mine was 16.something. after months of acupuncture and a major diet change I got my bfp with IVF #4.
good luck.

"our IF story"
My highest FSH was around 12-13, and I got pg on my third IUI cycle. Remember that FSH is only one indicator of ovarian reserve-- a lot of other things come into play. 12 is not that high, really, and lots of women have a great response and make lots of follies with FSH that high or higher. Your RE might want to change your protocol if future treatments are necessary. If he gets all gloom and doom about an FSH of 12 (which he shouldn't), go somewhere else!
How did your last IVF cycle go?
Any quality or quantity issues?
Some believe FSH can be artificially raised by repeated stim cycles (taxing the ovaries and not letting them recover with some down cycles).
As PP's have metioned the main difference you'll likely see is a reduction in # of eggs produced. ?
You may want to consider having an AMH test done to rule out quality issues.
As you can see by the bunch of replies... ?high FSH is scary but not insurmountable. ? You're after your one golden egg and I'm praying like mad that you get it!

Total score: 6 pregnancies, 5 losses, 2 amazing blessings that I'm thankful for every single day.
I don't usually post here - I normally just lurk - but I always want to respond to high FSH posts and offer some reassurance.
My highest CD3 FSH was 12.8 (seems to be a common number among the respondents here
). My only treatment cycle was a CCCT, which I failed miserably, but ended up with a natural BFP the very next cycle (he's two weeks old now). Also, I'm a lot older than many of the previous posters -- so I didn't exactly have age in my favor, either. I agree with others regarding accupuncture -- although my FSH didn't really go down, I think it helped.
One piece of advice, if your RE is very negative about the chances of you getting pregnant, find a new RE ASAP. The attitude of the RE plays a big role in success with high FSH. For example, my RE wasn't optimistic per se, but she wasn't negative, either, and in fact, told me on my cancelled cycle (due to a cyst) to try naturally because my "chances aren't zero" -- and damn if she wasn't right!
Best wishes to you and hope to see you over here soon!
My highest FSH was 40 although it averaged around 16-18. And I have AMA (42 now). After 2 failed IVFs, I got pregnant on my own at 41yo. I was also doing acupuncture and taking multiple chinese herbs.
It can happen. Best of luck!
