2nd Trimester

Are you worried about how your pet(s) will adjust to baby?

We have one dog and one cat.  While we are overjoyed and so excited, I can't help but wonder how our fur-kids will handle the new baby?  I know they'll adjust quickly, especially our dog, but I think I am giving him extra attention now, because I know he is not going to get so much after August!

Anyone else have pets that they treat like babies?

  • Oh yes.... Oscar started acting weird when I became PG... couldn't figure out why for a while... but we think he can sense it. He starting peeing in the house! Almost killed him. We have gone back to keeping him in his crate when we are not home, and are making sure to pay lots of attention to him. He's gotten better, but still actus funny with me sometimes. He will sit and stare at me, but not come sit with me, only sometimes though. He is great with little kids, and babys too... so hopefully it won't be too different when its our baby in his house 24/7.

  • My pet acts like a baby to start with! My real fear is that when people have bought us a rattle or a music toy for the baby... our dog goes crazy and doesnt realize its not for him.

  • We have 3 dogs (a rottweiler, chihauhua and Shih tzu).  Since  becoming pregnant they're all seeming more needy and loving towards me.

My only concern is that the rottweiler LOVES little kids (most parents aren't too excited over this, he just wants to lick them though. :)).  My biggest concern is him becoming really protective of the baby.

I don't think the little ones will care too much.  My dogs are funny though, they don't bark, but they all three cry at the same time...it's hysterical but probably won't be when the LO starts crying too!

  • I am worried about our cat. I think he can sense changes in my body (he thinks my bump is a bed) and he obviopusly can tell there are changes around the house as wel set up the nursery. I am worried, he is a very social cat, and very attached to me. I think he will adjust tho.

  • I am worried, but my husband and I will do everything in our power to adjust our animals to the new baby.  We have been really working with our dogs with training and I think after a few months they will be fine.  It will not be easy but I think it will be okay.  I am more worried the cats will think the baby is something to lay on for warmth.  Our pets are our babies and they know something's different with mom.

  • a litttle worried b/c she is so spoiled now. I just got a recording of a baby crying and when I played it she was clearly freaked out. I guess I will have to work on it. If you want the download of the crying baby goto www.beprepared.net  (It drove my husband nuts lolololol)
  • Yes, but they will adjust with time.  We have two cats and a dog (great dane) so he will have to learn fast with the baby.  He is very gentle and I probably worry more about him becoming over protectant.  So we will see how things work out in September.
  • Not worried.  Vito does great with kids.  Our friends bring their 2 year old over, who abuses him to no end, and he just takes it.  He really likes to lick, though, which I'm guessing baby won't be too fond of.  Other than that I think it'll work out just fine.
  • I am actually very concerned about our one cat (we have two).  She has started pooping - not peeing - outside the litter box.  There is nothing medically wrong with her... just a really bad behavioral problem.  We know we can't have a cat pooping outside the box with a child in close proximity but we just don't know what the hell to do with her.  We've tried everything: changing the brand of her litter, cleaning it twice a day (but obviously she thinks it's clean enough if she's peeing in it) and giving her extra attention.  Her sister is a little domineering and we think that could be the reason why she's acting out.
  • Oh yah, our kitty is our first baby! We swear she's half human, so we've been in the habit of calling her the baby in the past - trying to knock that since there's a real baby on the way!

She's been getting lots of attention now, too. I think pets will adjust quickly. Especially if they are already part of the family, they'll be very interested in the new member of the family and balance will come eventually. Best of luck!
