2nd Trimester

My teeth hate me.

I have had such bad pain from my teeth and gums off and on since finding out I'm pregnant.  It seems like nothing helps.  I've gargled with salt water, used Tylenol to reduce the pain, brush frequently, etc.  Any recommendations out there for other ways to make the pain go away?

  • Not trying to be a smart @ss but did you ask your dentist?  They may be able to give you a suggestion.  GL!

Unfortunately, I do not have dental insurance/can afford dental work.  So I am trying to find any other solutions I can.  Tongue Tied

  •  I finally just got my dental insurance in order and went a few days ago. My mouth hurt! I found out I have a few cavities and will get those filled in a few weeks but they did a regular cleaning ( they can clean sooo much better than you can at home) and that made me feel so much better! I might be something to look into paying out of pocket for.

  • Pregnancy hormones send the gums and everything else into overdrive... Start brushing with Sensodyn ONLY. It has an ingredient that reduces sensitivity. It may take a few days or more to notice a huge difference but it will happen. Make sure that you do not brush less because of the discomfort. Only use a soft bristled toothbrush and floss daily. Try it out, be consistant and it will work. I've worked in community health (dental assistant) where we primarily saw pregnant/postpartum patients and our focus was on education and prevention. Good luck!

  • Hydrogen peroxide works well for sore gums. I will run a q-tip of HP along my gumline where it is bothering me or gargle with half HP half water- it works pretty well.

My gums are really senstive as is and have bothered me with both pregnancies.

  • Did you try switching your tooth paste??  If I use the whitening tooth paste mine do this.
  • And also floss... I know not every one flosses, and when I was in h/s I hated flossing but my dentist explained to me that if you don't floss you get decalcification in between your teeth and that leads to cavities and daily flossing can actually reverse this.

Absolutely floss and/or purchase a waterpik. I put in a capful of mouthwash and it cured the pregnancy gum problems. I try to use it every day.
