2nd Trimester

After my almost passing out episode today...

should I be worried about flying this weekend or will it really make no difference.  I googled it and found that it's easier to get dehydrated while flying so I am going to drink tons of water, but I didn't know if anything else that has to do with flying could make me feel more faint.  My biggest fear is passing out at 35,000 feet.

I meant to ask the nurse this, but I forgot.

I don't think you need to worry. Just keep hydrated on the plane. I had a 5.5 hour flight and didn't have any problems, aside from having to run to the bathroom every 20 mins. Hope you have an isle seat.

  • I hate flying, so I would welcome passing out at 35,000 feet.

I would ask your Dr what they think. ?The pressure can make you light headed, esp if you have inner ear, or sinus issues.?

  • I had a lot of issues with inner ear problems growing up, and flying tends to make me feel a bit lightheaded sometimes because of it. I've never had it get so bad that I actually felt faint, though, so your mileage may vary on that one.

Just remember that you'll have to buy water once you get past security!

  • Be sure to eat every couple hours, to keep your blood sugar as stable as possible. Stay off your feet as much as you can, and have your DH (if you're traveling together) do as much of the lifting/carrying bags as possible. Drink water like crazy... and move slowly from sitting/laying to standing. Also, don't let yourself get too hot.?

Have you had any blood tests for anemia? I have been having a lot of dizzy spells lately and it turns out my anemia was worse than it was at 8 wks.. so I am on extra iron pills than before and was given all the advice I listed above.?

If you are really concerned about flying, I'd call the nurse back and get your OB's opinion. But as far as I understand, dizzy spells are very common during 2nd Tri.??

We are flying Southwest so I get to choose my seat.  I am having DH check us in online the moment we are allowed to because I want to be one of the first to choose my seat for bathroom reasons!

Thank you!  I will call the nurse tomorrow just to see if they have any suggestions.  I may also ask for them to draw blood to see how my iron levels are.  I've been slightly anemic before.

remember to bring snacks then too since SW doesn't really give you anything to eat.
    How long is your flight?

I think like 3.5 hours.  It's not too long.  I will make sure to go out and buy snacks tomorrow.  I can take snacks through security, right?  Just not liquids.

Ya, food is ok to take through security. You can always bring an empty water bottle and fill it once your through too.

    Hope it goes quickly!

Thank you.  I haven't flown for over a year so I am totally out of the loop on all of the rules since they seem to always be changing them!

  • I would definitely have your iron levels checked for anemia.  Having passed out on an airplane before, I don't recommend it, but you can take precautions to avoid it.  As mentioned earlier, I have low blood sugar, low blood pressure, anemia, and an irregular heart beat, so I am more prone to fainting than the average person, but here's my advice for combating it!

    - Drink LOTS of water and also some Gatorade which will keep you more hydrated (electrolytes) and also helps with the low blood sugar - apple juice or something else with sugars will help as well, but my doc recommended Gatorade

    - Eat frequent small meals

    - Don't stand up too quickly, but do get up and move around the plane every hour or so

I'm sure you'll be fine - the most important thing is to drink LOTS of water!

And in the worst case scenario, if you do feel faint, let the flight attendant know, especially if you're traveling alone.  If you do pass out, the best thing to do is to LAY DOWN.  They also ended up putting me on oxygen on the plane, and checked blood pressure etc.  Once I was more alert, they had me drink water and apple juice, and I felt better within an hour or two.
