Working Moms - When do you workout?

By the time I get home in the evening I have just enough time to spend an hour or so with my son before we put him to bed. Then I wash bottles, go through mail, clean up toys, maybe throw in a laundry, etc. - after that, I'm tired, I am not motivated to excercise (nor do I want to right before bed anyway), I want to go to bed, so I do. On the weekends I get in a few walks with ds but other than that I feel like I'm chasing my tail and don't have time to devote to a workout program.

What am I doing wrong - help me with my time management skills!!

Re: Working Moms - When do you workout?

  • I am struggling with this as well.

  • I don't and I'm not putting pressure on myself to workout.  There really is no time.  I watch what I eat and try to control my weight that way, take some walks with DD now that the weather is a little better.  I'm hoping when I'm off in the summer I can start some kind of work out plan.  For now, I don't worry about it.
  • I work from home, so I do it either in the morning before I log on, or during lunch.  My opinion is that if you don't get it done in the AM, it's not going to get done.  I second that the evening is way too hectic, plus you want to spend time with your DC.  Could you fit it in before work?  It might mean waking up earlier, but it is probably the best option.
  • I'm with you...I'd love to know.  I work 7:45-5:45 M-Friday (with every other Friday off) and by the time I get home and run after two kids, I am WIPED!  But I really want to start some sort of exercise routine...
  • I do Baby Bootcamp on Saturdays with DS and we both love it. I also try and sneak in a few lunchtime workouts and maybe 1 evening workout a week. I get really tired after I put Ds to bed, so its hard to get motivated to workout then.
  • Ummm I don't!  I don't have time and if I have extra time I want to sleep!  Though we have a park in our backyard and we take walks there often

  • I honestly don't work out.

  • I guess it all depends on what time you get in and what time your son goes to bed. My husband hits the gym right after work and when he gets home I either go to the gym or go for a run. However, that works because my son has an abnormally late bedtime (which we are trying to change). I think the key is to take what you can get. Some weeks I get in 5 or 6 workouts, some weeks I get in 2.

I try to do find things i can do at home that at least make me feel like I've accomplished something. So if I'm having a bad week where I don't get in a lot of full work outs I try to at least do abs and pushups or jump rope.

     Good luck!

  • If all works out well, I have my mom pick DD up from the babysitters one day a week while I get a quick run in before picking her up. My MIL watches her Wednesdays and I normally do the same. I try to get one weekend day in as well. That being said, I normally end up exercising once a week and anything more than that is a bonus.

  • I have tried ever option ... before work (but I get to work at 6:30 so I am working out at like 5!), after work and just these last two weeks at lunch. I am really liking the lunch thing. I am lucky I have a gym that is 2 miles from my work. I am actually really focused when I get back to work and it curbs off my lunch-time hunger for awhile. I think even if you were able to get in a good run/walk at lunch that might help.

  • I am on sabatical now because DS is sick and is waking up more than normal.  Typically though, my DH and I take turns going to the gym in the morning.  I wake up before anyone else is up, put on my gym clothes and go.  I get ready there (definately pack the bag the night before or you will forget something) and it is so nice.  I get to take a long hot shower with no interuptions, watch a little Today show while getting ready, then head off to work.  I work out Tuesdays and Thursdays and DH works out M, W, F.
  • When I was working I would either go on my lunch break or get up early and go in the morning before work and let my DH take care of the kids in the morning. I would leave out everything he needed so the once or twice a week that I did that he would just need to dress them, feed them and then take them to daycare.

  • Work out???  HAHAHAHAHAHAHA....(wipes eyes).  Good times.  Good times.

I really need to start, but heck if I know how I'll pull it off!  I like NewBlue's idea -- maybe I'll try that.

  • I struggled with this too when I came back to work and really didn't have a routine from Jan-Mar, but starting last week, I've started working out on my way home from work.   It makes it easier that my office has a gym on the first floor, so its literally on my way out the door.   I haven't done a lot - just 30 minutes cardio.

  • I go immediately after work, while my husband goes and picks up DS. Then by time I get home they have generally been home for about 30 minutes. I do live pretty close to my work, and gym so this makes it easier. I don't have a long commute or anything to fit in the schedule either.

I also do curves, and that is only a 30 minute workout 3 times a week. It is the first "program" that has ever worked for me because it is quick and effective.

  • I'm lucky that I work in a high school, so I'm typically done with work at 3pm. DH works part time at night, so as soon as we get his work schedule, I choose 3-4 days of the week that I can go to the gym after work. I don't stay long - 45 minutes max - and right now am just focusing on cardio so that I can train for a 5k coming up in May. Having a goal is the only thing that pushes me, otherwise I'd be content to just go home and play with my son.
  • I have everything I need in my garage, so when I get home I play with DS, do his bedtime routine (he is asleep by 7:15) then I change and do 30 minutes of cardio 5 times a week.
  • I try and go twice during the work week and on Saturday and Sunday.  On weekdays, I get there around 6ish and am there about an hour.  I have DH pick up DS from daycare and have him start dinner/feed DS on those days.  .

  • I just started a boot camp class that meets from 5:45 to 6:30.  It's MWF and only a few minuts from my house, so I can get up at 5:30 and make it on time.  I'm back and showered before DD wakes up.  DH and I take turns getting her ready in the morning, so he does most of her morning routine while I get ready for work.  I realized this was the only way I'd get a work out in - I don't want to go after work since that means even less time with DD, and I'm usually too tired in the evenings to motivate myself to work out after she goes to bed.  So far it's working great - I'm just going to bed a little earlier, and it feels great to be done so early in the morning!

  • I work from home 2x a week- those are the days I go to the gym. Every now and then if I have no errands to run and I am feeling good, I will go once DD is asleep. But its rare. I am so wiped in the evenings. Plus, like you stated- all the house stuff to do and bottles etc. puts me to bed early. I also try to go at least once over the weekend. So typically 2-3 days a week. Its a start I guess. If I didnt work from home, I dont know how I would do it.

  • I work full time (including a 1 hour commute) and still manage to workout 5-6 times a week. Luckily I have a treadmill and weights at home. Here's my schedule:

Home from work between 6:30 and 7:15pm. Quickly refill bottles with pumped milked (I have my childcare clean the used ones for me) and feed DD and myself dinner (usually something microwaved for me). By 7:45 we start DD's bedtime routine which includes bath every other night, playtime/cuddling, pj's, book, nurse to sleep by 8:30pm. Then I finish cleaning up if needed, change my clothes, and I'm on the treadmill by 9pm. Run for an hour while I watch TIVO'd shows, shower, in bed by 10:30 or 11pm. Up at 6:00am to do it all over again...

I save laundry and chores for the weekend or my DH does it when he's home (works out of town). I'm always rushing but I do it for my own sanity. As a plus, thanks to the workout/BF combo I weigh less now than I did in high school!!
