Upcoming cross country flight - CARES?

We are traveling with our almost 2.5 year old at the end of this month.  We will have her in her own seat.  I don't want to lug that car seat around the airport and it creates too much temptation for her to kick the back of the seat in front.  Can I just use the lap belt for her?

Does anyone have CARES?  Do you recommend?

I know what my hub would say if I bought that -- "Is that really necessary? If the plane is going down how much does a seat belt help? "

Is it mainly for severe turbluence?

Thanks!

I know it's safer to bring the car seat on the plane, but honestly, I don't think I'd do it with DD. She does NOT like her car seat, so we'd just be stuck with a seat she wouldn't use. I've never actually seen anyone use a car seat on the plane anyway.

We did buckle DD with the lap belt, but that was more because she was entertained by it than because we thought it would keep her safe. If you're seriously concerned about a crash, you should bring a car seat or CARES.

I think the CARES would be a good alternative if you don't want her flying without a proper harness, because unlike a bulky car seat, you can stow it away if she fights it. However, I've never used it or seen anyone use it, so I can't give a recommendation for it.

If you do decide to bring her car seat onboard, I've heard good things about the Go Go Kidz Travelmate.

  • We used the lap belt and she had a great time making herself 'safe' over and over again buy buckleing and unbuckleing it.
  • I thought over the age of two, they have to have their own seat?? ?
