Breastfeeding

New mom and I have questions!

Hi all-

My DS was born Friday morning and we are trying to get the hang of breastfeeding.  All three lactation consultants that we saw in the hospital said our latch looked good and he has been producing enough wet and poopy diapers.  However, my nipples are starting to get chapped/sore.  It hurts when he first latches on and then feels better once he gets started.  Is this normal?  I keep hearing it shouldn't hurt at all.  I'm using Lansinoh after each feeding and I'm not cracked or bleeding.  Any suggestions?

  • the best moisturizer you can use on your nipples is your own milk. They just need time to toughen up.. soreness in the beginning and even latching sensitivity is normal. It wil stop

  • totally normal.

put some of the BM on your nipples after baby is done.

  • The initial hurting when DS latches on is normal.  What you're feeling is your letdown.  I used to hand express a few drops of milk before I latched DD on help with the pain.  It will get better over time and shouldn't hurt anymore.

Oh and I preferred the Medela brand of lanonin over Lansinoh.

  • Totally normal.  Pretty soon you will have nips of steel!Big Smile

I used to hand express some milk after each feeding to cover my nipples with it and let it air dry.

  • Totally normal but you might want to try wearing these, too. I used them for the first two weeks until my nips toughened up and they were a godsend.
