School year pregnancy

I have to tell my boss about my pregnancy soon because of close quarters and obvious symptoms. Besides that, several of the moms in my class have already figured it out and I don't want anyone to slip and tell her before I do.

I do know that I would like to come back and teach until December, but I don't know if I will want to stay home for a few months after the baby is born, or for the rest of the school year. It also depends on daycare, there are no public facilities that take under 1 year olds here, and most local home daycares are pretty sketchy.

Is it against the law for the school board (private school) to tell me that unless I plan on teaching the full year next year, or coming back within a certain time frame, that I will not have a job at all? I know it will be a inconvenience for them to wait for a decision, but I don't want to tell them that I will come back after having a baby until I really feel like I know what I want to do.

Re: School year pregnancy

  • I teach too. This year, one of our girls left in October...she was due to come back in January and 1 week before her return she called the school to let them know that she wasn't coming back. I would offer no information that would imply that you weren't fully intent on coming back (even if you aren't sure yet). What are they going to do if you decide to be a SHM? Fire you? =)

I have already told my principal b/c I work in Special Ed. and often have to lift children. His first question was "do you think you will want to come back?" and he quickly followed that up with "even if you decide later you don't want to...it's a woman's right to change her mind!". Great Guy!  =)

  • I am also a teacher, and especially with a private school (I worked in a charter school which has many of the same aspects) they do not have to guarantee you can have your job back- I say stick to telling them you are coming back, and if you change your mind, then you can inform them then. I told my current principal that I am pregnant, but have not discussed plans for next year with him ( I fully intend on being a SHM for the first few years) and since it is so early in the pregnancy I don't plan on crossing that bridge yet.
  • I have my meeting in 10 minutes. Wish me luck. I'll let you know what I find out.
