Multiples

Honestly, have you ever gotten your multiples switched around?

My MIL keeps on telling me to paint one of the boys toe nails when they are born so I will be able to tell them apart.  I am so curious to see how identical they will actually be.

  • I've never confused my girls.  DH has - which was very funny to watch.  Now that they are older, they are easier to tell apart.
  • My children are fraternal and we still did mix them up.  SIL has identicals and they still paint the big toenail and they are 6 months old.
  • We painted one toenail on each of them when they first came home from the hospital.  I've never had an issue telling them apart.  They sometimes get called by each other's names, but that's just like any siblings, I know who they are, I just can't get the right name out sometimes.

We only painted their toenails once, and I don't think we really needed it, it was just reassurance that we wouldn't get them mixed up...

I was really worried about being able to tell them apart, but really, it's not hard.  As their mom you know all the little differences.  I can't really describe the differences in my girls, they just look different to me.

    you'll be fine.

  • yeah. all the time. but i figure it out before too long. :P

  • If mine were the same sex, I was planning to always dress them similarly, but in different colors.  So one would wear blue, the other green, etc.  Before I knew that they were b/g, I would have nightmares about confusing them.

  • I have identical boys.  Usually only I can tell them apart.

I can tell them apart no problem and have never gotten them mixed up (although this was my biggest fear).  There was a pound difference between them at birth and that pound is a big deal, so I think that is how I learned who is who.

Also - to me one has a chubbier face then the other - I look at their faces alot since they are BF.

I don't dress them the same and I also assigned colors to the boys, Connor is green and Aidan is blue.

I use their socks to do this.  It helps other people and my husband to tell who is who.

For me I just know - its strange.  Although I have found I have a hard time telling them apart in pictures!

  • In the beginning, when you don't really know them that well yet, and you are sleep deprived and crazy, it's a very real possibility.  We pained one of our DD's nails (obviously the one w/o polish was the other one - LOL!, and DS was easy to tell since a) he had a penis, and b) he was frat), which came in handy more times than I can count.  My girls go through stages where they look completely the same and then some where they look nothing alike.  So at 2 AM when DH fed the same baby twice and couldn't figure out why she wasn't drinking her bottle even though she was screaming for it, when I said, check the nail, it all made sense.  We don't do it anymore, and we probably stopped when they were 3 or 4 months, so it won't be forever, but it was really, really helpful to have done that when they were newborns and we were constantly pissed off and not paying attention.

     HTH!

  • Question...How can you be 100% certain they have never gotten mixed up and you just think that they haven't? Especially in the early days if you did not mark them in some way?? Just curious..this was my fear before I found out I was having b/g twins.
  • Honestly - we painted one of their toenails blue until they started putting their feet in their mouths and it wasn't feasible anymore.  Helped tremendously, particularly for DH and grandparents!!

I did give one of them the other ones antibiotic once (xmas morning) - he was on a different kind, and I called poison control!  They laughed at me - I guess mixing antibiotics in proper dosage is no big deal - who knew!   Anyway, as much as I can usually tell them apart, there are times when I ahve to step back and really look!

Point is, painting a toenail like we did is not a bad idea!!  :)

  • Nope.

  • Well for me if there is really no way to mix the boys up.  Connor was born with an issue on one of his toes.  Something to do with the amonic(sp??) bands.  On his left foot 2 of his toes are formed differently.

So worst case if I felt I had confused them - I just have to pull off their socks.

It has never happened.  A lot of times to me they don't look identical because I know their faces so well.  I look at them at least 8 times a day for 20 mins or more while they BF.  I can't explain it - I just never get them confused.

  • My girls are fraternal, but looked so much alike it was scary.

I was so nervous to take their hospital bracelets off that I kept them on way longer than I was supposed to (oops).  When I realized I needed to cut them off, I painted Abby's toenail "just in case."  Everything worked out fine - lol - but I was a little freaked at the time!

  • Mine look nothing alike so I haven't had to worry about this.  But I did worry about this before they came.  We bought little hair ties in different colors to put on their ankles if they did look too much alike.
