Tell me about your pumping schedule...

in preparation for returning to work.  I return to work in 4 weeks and need to start pumping so that I can have some breastmilk stored up for DS at daycare.  I am just wondering how you schedule it with DC's regular feedings.

Thanks in advance for your help!

Re: Tell me about your pumping schedule...

  • Before I went back to work (starting around 4 weeks or so), I pumped once a day, in the morning (since your supply is higher then), while DS was taking his morning nap.  And, we gave DS a tiny bottle once a day so I'd pump then too because I was missing a feeding (though I wasn't as consistent as I should have been with that bottle and DS gave us a scare the last couple of weeks before I went back to work because he wouldn't take the bottle).  It all worked out in the end.

  • p.s.  Since you're still establishing your supply, if you start adding a pumping (even if it's extra), your body will adjust.  It might take a few days of not getting much (remember, DC doesn't eat much at this point anyway), but it will increase over time.
  • I usually pumped in the morning, about an hour after I fed DS.  I found it stressful to try to pump in addition to feeding and taking care of DS, so I didn't have much extra when I went back.  It worked out fine for me and I was able to build up a stash over time.  Just a little reassurance in case you don't have time/inclination to get a lot extra stored up.
