3rd Trimester

Not the call I wanted to get today.

We saw a little girl yesterday at work that I was in close contact with. Today, I got a call from my boss that the girls mom called her concerned about me. The little girl went back to her PCP and it turns out she has Fifths Disease, which can be bad for pregnant women in their first six weeks AND in their last trimester. So I have to have extra bloodwork done tonight to see whether or not I'm immune (over half of women have already been exposed by the age of 18 I guess, so there's a chance I've already been exposed). If I don't have the antibodies, I'm not sure what that will mean. I'm not terribly worried about it, but it is in the back of my mind. It's ironic that I got through my whole pregnancy at work without being exposed to anything potentially harmful, until my very very last day. Bahhhhh.

  • Same thing happend to me at 7 weeks.

My bloodwork came back that I was immune and neither I or my mom ever remember me having it. You will probably be immune too-especially if you work with kids/patients. Good luck!

  • I just found out that I have a student whose brother has Fifth's right now.  It sucks because I can't help but worry, but we can't keep students out of school if they are ebing treated....great so we'll all be at risk!  Our school nurse said that it is mostly a concern for 1st tri....I'm going to ask my OB tomorrow anyways.
  • The vast majority of people are already immune to 5th's Disease by adulthood.  It's not uncommon for kids to have 5th's and not even know it......the symptoms can be pretty vague (rash, fever) and go away on their own, so many cases of 5th's go undiagnosed (one reason you and your mom probably don't remember you having it).

I don't think 5th's is exclusionary either (ie, kids can't be kept out of school because of it).  As a preschool teacher I've been exposed to just about every childhood illness that there is (including 5th's) and my dr. wasn't really concerned.

  • I have been teaching for 10 years and was NOT immune when I was exposed at about 18-20weeks PG. I had to have blood work done for 4 consecutive weeks to see if I came up as positive. After a month of weekly bloodwork, my doctor felt confident that I would be okay, but that was a long month.

Because I teach at a middle school, the parents do not have to notify anyone about the Fifth Disease, which I find completely ridiculous. I only found out b/c my co-worker contracted the disease from a student and told me about it.

My understanding is that prior to 20 weeks=  possibly bad news, but after 20 weeks = not as risky. So I hope you are out of the woods!
