Multiples

Doctors and their toys...(a little long)

I need some info from some moms of multiples who have been through this. I am 11 weeks along and expecting twins, no health complications or anything. I feel like my doctors are going way overboard from what I have read in the books...so I need to hear it from some real people. They want to do ultrasounds at every visit from now on, they want to start seeing me twice a month starting at week 20 and then at week 32 they want to see me every week, should I make it to week 36 they want me twice a week. I feel like this is excessive...but what do I know? To those of you who have been through this, what kind of scheduling program did your Dr follow, did they do ultrasounds at every visit, what kind of tests are expected, etc. My insurance is ok but doesn't cover all this and it's quickly getting overwhelming, I don't want to miss out on something that is going to get me two healthy and happy babies...but I just feel like they are over the top.

Re: Doctors and their toys...(a little long)

  • It doesn't sound excessive to me.  I ended up going into PTL at 27 weeks so I wish I had been monitored that closely.  Check with your insurance to see if you're considered high risk because you're having twins.

  • That actually sounds about right to me. Twin pregnancies can get really bad very quickly, and it is definitely best to be watched closely.
  • It also sounds about right to me.  Also, your insurance should cover it (at least mine did) b/c it's considered a high risk pregnancy.
  • so far i have been seen monthly by my OB and montly by my Peri - so basically i'm in one of their offices every 2 weeks.  My OB doesn't always do an US - but will do one if he/she can't find the HB easily with the doppler.  The peri appts are all about growth scans and cervix checks every time (other than the NTS at 12w and the anatomy scan at 20w).

I am now seeing my OB every 2 weeks since my 27w appt.  I'm not sure when it goes to weekly with him or the peri.

more visits = better.  I have had to go in for some random visits inbetween my regular ones b/c of cramping, dehydration, etc.

  • Not excessive but standard care with a pregnancy of multiples.  You insurance should cover this as you are automatically high risk with twins.
  • Nope that is normal.. I know a pain but well worth it to ensure the safety of your babies. The us are more to make sure your cervix is not getting short or having issues, which can be sign of pre term labor. They know what they are doing
  • It sounds right to me. I was put on hospital bedrest right after one of my routine appointments because my cervix started funneling (opening up from the inside out). If I wouldn't have been getting ultrasound the doctors wouldn't have known this was happening until maybe it was too late for me to get the steroid shots.
  • I would say that sounds about right.  I saw my OB once a month and a peri once a month for growth u/s - so I had an appt with one of them about every 2 weeks.  At 32 weeks I started NST's at the peri's once a week and had weekly appt.'s with my OBGYN.  While it was definitely a lot of appt's, I was very glad to be monitored so closely.  As pp said - multiples pg's are considered high risk so check with your insurance about coverage.
  • With my last pregnancy I saw my Peri every 2 weeks(I had an u/s at every appt) starting at wk7.  Because I was pregnant with twins and because I had previously lost twins at 24 wks.  I wish my old OB saw me more often with my first pregnancy...  Maybe she could of done something to save them...  I am not saying that to scare you but I feel that with twins you need to be closely monitored.
  • Absolutely standard.  You are considered high risk because you're carrying twins and should be very conscious of your pregnancy.  Many of us delivered pre-term because that is one of the very real risks of carrying multiples.

Welcome to a very special club.  You're not like other pregnancies, and you won't be like other mommies.  I like to think we were all hand picked because we can handle it :)

    Good luck!

  • your schedule sounds a lot like mine and yes youre right it is quite overwhelming, but as you get further along you will be sooo grateful for all of this monitoring.  I started having contrax at 30 wks and didnt even know I was having them so if it wasnt for my monitoring appt and ptl screening I probably would have gone into labor.  Just take a deep breath and take it one week at a time.

  • Yea, that's not over the top, that's good care for a woman growing two people. Twins pregnancies are anything but normal. Be glad they want to give you proper care.

  • My visits were about the same as yours but I only had ultrasounds once a month until 33 weeks and then went to every other week.  Honestly I think it's a good idea to have ultrasounds every week after 32 weeks.  Our DS had issues with cord blood flow and they probably would have spotted it earlier if we had more ultrasounds.  His growing really slowed down and they did not catch it because it is so hard to see things in ultrasounds.  If you have more there is a better chance at getting a good view.  I delivered at 36w6d and because DS had these issues he was born at only 4lbs 9oz (DD was 6lbs 1oz) and spent 10 days in the NICU.

More monitoring the better in my opinion.

  • This is the same multiples protocol my ob used.  Not excessive at all and I had a complication-free pg
  • pretty much on par with twin pg. things start getting dicey around 26 weeks or so for most ppl so they are being cautious...which is a really good thing!

your insurance should cover it if it is deemed nesseicerry by the doctors..

gl and be glad you have good doctors!!!

  • That sounds like my pregnancy.  My OB and MFM had the same schedule for me.  I likes all the u/s; it gave me a chance to see my girls.
