Wow, our house is for sale, and someone changed the locks!

Our vacant house is currently for sale. We went by there yesterday and noticed that the door handle had been changed. I immediately called my realtor to see if she had changed it for any reason, and she said it wasn't her.

We went back today to put a new lock set on and we're going to file a police report. But, crazy! 

I'm pretty freaked out. Who would do that? Nothing was messed up in the house, thankfully. Has anyone heard about this happening? Just curious. Thanks.

(BTW, our house is located where there are MANY foreclosures)

    Could have been a mistake, the lock company changed the wrong house locks..

    Since you said this area has a lot of foreclosures, then my guess is the person who changes the locks for the banks screwed up.  He/she must have had the wrong address on the paperwork or something.

    But how would they have gotten into the house to change the locks? Plus, when a house forecloses and they change locks, they put up a notice about removing the contents of the house.

    My current thought is that maybe a squatter changed the locks and is seeing if it is noticed before they "move in." I've heard of this happening. 

    The other thing: The door handle was OLD. And, they only replaced the handle, not the deadbolt (they disengaged the deadbolt). The bank would put on a new knob, right?

    That is very creepy - although, the "wrong address" makes sense.  We had something similar happen with our garage door lock - the next door neighbor called a garage repair guy to change their garage lock and the guy ended up changing ours instead, so mix-ups do happen!

    Odd though...

    They have special tools that allow them to remove door locks and handles without having the key.  My guess is that banks rarely have the keys to the home when they foreclose.  I know if it was my house being foreclosed on, I wouldn't go dropping off my keys at the bank or anything.

    I would also think they would just change the handle lock and disengage the deadbolt for cost purposes.  Deadbolts can get really expensive!
