Babies: 9 - 12 Months

Has anyone ever been to Nags Head or surrounding areas?

We are thinking about taking a small family vaca and that's not too far from us. If you have been what did you think about it? Any recommendations on where to stay? We REALLY need a little time away. TIA!

Re: Has anyone ever been to Nags Head or surrounding areas?

  • My family went about 15 years ago (long long ago) to Nags Head, Kitty Hawk, Duck area. We rented one of those beach houses and had a blast. It was only a few blocks to the beach, we went to the Wright Brother's museum, to the big sand dunes, all you can eat seafood buffet. It was really nice and clean.

  • We go to the Outer Banks a lot and it's perfect for families.  Nags Head is nice but pretty developed and commercialized.  I've been to Duck and really enjoyed it.  Also Cape Hatteras (which is a little farther south) and the surrounding areas are great places to visit.  We're going to Avon in June and I can't wait to get away.
  • We go every year and it's great! The beaches are clean, the weather is usually great, and it's just a good time.  We've stayed in South Nagshead which is a few miles away from the "main drag" in that area and Kill Devil Hills which is right by a lot of restaurants, etc.  I highly recommend either location!

  • We've stayed in Nags Head, Duck, and Corolla.  I liked Duck the best because it was close to a cute little town, but not all built up and commercial like Nags Head.  The beaches are lovely, and you can get really great deals on rentals if you go in the off season.
  • We went to Kill Devil Hills a few years back and REALLY enjoyed it!  We rented a house with a pool and the beach was right across the street.  I can't wait to go back!!!  I definitely recommend Nags Head!

  • I actually used to live down there and it's a great place to vacation!  I would recommend going before school age kids get out for the summer if you can.  It's a lot less busy and I'm pretty sure the rates for the cottages and hotels are cheaper.  I've heard that the rental industry is really hurting this year so maybe you can get a great deal!  Along with the beach and lighthouses I would recommend going to the aquarium on Roanoke Island.

If you have any questions about the OBX let me know, I'd be happy to answer them for you.

  • we went to Carolla - Outter Banks (OBX)! It was amazing. We went with about 20 friends for a week. We rented a house on the beach with enough beds and bedrooms and bathrooms for everyone!

We were on the beach and had a hot tub and an inground pool.

We conceived DD on that trip ;)

  • The OBX (Outer Banks) is the greatest place on earth!!!! :) When I was a kid I used to go there with my family every summer, my grandmother had a beach house in Kill Devil Hills that we would stay at sometimes and we would also rent houses in Duck or Corolla.  We're going this summer with my mom, DH, DD, my two sisters and their husbands.  It's been a few years since I was last there and I'm soooo excited!!

Corolla is definitely the 'higher-end' area to stay at, the houses are unbelieveable, most have pools and are close to the beach.  If you stay in Duck you can either stay on the sound-side (which is calmer) or the ocean-side and houses are a little more reasonable.  There are several rental comapnies down there that allow you to search for what you're looking for and see pictures of the places.

As far as things to do...there are lots of little shops in Corolla (Timbuck 2 Shopping center) and Duck (at Scarborough Fair shopping center).  And the places we always have to eat at are Tortugas Lie in Nags Head(you have to get the Co-Co Loco Chicken!!), Darrels (Seafood restaurant in Manteo), Duck Deli (in Duck), Smokeys (BBQ in Corolla).  And there are several lighthouses in the area that you can tour, there are the dunes to hike up, the Wright Memorial, and of course the beach which is really nice.

    Hope that helps!  Have fun!!!

ETA: Oh and you like sweets, you MUST get fudge from The Fudgery, they have a few locations throughout the OBX, if you pick up a free SunnyDays Guide there should be coupons in there for it.  It's seriously the best fudge I've ever had :)

  • We're going to the Outer Banks for a week this month - I love it! It's a great family place.
  • I see that you are at Langley. ?Have you looked into making a reservation through the Armed Forces Vacation Club? ?We rented a 2 bedroom condo on the OBX for $329/week. Most places give military discounts because of the proximity to Camp Lejeune and the air station. ?
  • We go to OBX several time a year.  We have always rented a house. I've stayed in Corolla and Duck, but we personally prefer Ocracoke Island - although it's further south.
  • WE used to go there when I was growing up and we loved it! I was just thinking about Nags Head the other day and how great of a spot it is for family vacations.  we used to rent a little house when we went there.
  • We went to Kill Devil Hills and stayed at a Hilton Garden Inn (about the only hotel, the rest are rental houses).  Its was a very nice hotel!!!  If you just plan to hang out on the beach you'll be fine but it is an expensive area!!!  And not a ton to do from what I saw.  We went in the off season (October) and it wasn't beach weather any more and DH and I went to lunch at a normal restaurant (nothing fancy) and with NO alcohol I think we paid close to $40!!!
