and this lady made me soooooooo mad. Plus two questions. sorry so long
Evans adjusted age is 1 year 3 months. She told me they can't even do anything for babies under 2 years old. First I know this isn't true because some NICU friends that I met while we were in there their babies are going and are same age. Second, why would she have us even come in then.
Then she says that her office is his playroom and he can do whatever. Evan is into EVERYTHING and started to go to her files and almost started to pull them out. I grab him and tell her that he LOVES paper. Loves to rip it and eat it. She said oh i have paper and gives him a stack full of paper, two seconds later he has a mouthful. I get it out and she is horrified. She keeps on saying over and over 'i'm not sure what to make of that', or 'i don't think i've ever seen that before'.
some other stuff happened that made me mad but whatever. then saturday I get a report of the visit and about 4 times throughout the report she states 'he eats paper'. Is trying to eat paper really that uncommon for a child of that age?
She also said that he is extremely active and hard to redirect. She was making it sound like he is ADD or something. Her office was an office. She had one shoebox with giant plastic animals in them for him to play with. It wasn't like it was a playroom or anything. What do you expect him to do.
Re: Evan went to see a speech therapist at Childrens Hospital
I'm sorry, that lady sounds like an a-s-s. Why would you describe an office as a playroom when it clearly isn't one?
And FWIW, I don't think eating paper is abnormal. Justin still likes to rip paper and chew it, just to get attention. I'm sorry your visit was disappointing.......that really stinks.

I would call and ask to speak to the director of the department.
No, that is not that weird for kids to eat paper. She gave it to him and kids like to explore with their mouths. My nephew used to chew on his cardboard books! And you know what else - he outgrew it, imagine that.
Sounds like she is not experience with babies of that age and perhaps you need to see someone different. I would call those friends if you have their number and ask who they see.
i would have been fuming!! Im sorry but she doesnt have a clue if she thinks toddlers eating paper is abnormal behavior, I cant even give Ben a book unless I want it half eaten in an hour... we have to keep all things paper away from him at all times or this is the result, he doesnt just chew it, he SWALLOWS it... I dont see this stopping anytime soon... I would ask to speak to a director

Hello-I am a speech therapist and I am sorry you had such a bad experience! I don't think it is abnormal for a young child to try to eat paper, or anything else they feel like putting in there mouth. That is a normal part of "exploring" their world. I don't know why she would have stated that he eats paper in her report. As for him being active, again that is part of being a little boy! I have worked with children under the age of 2. Usually during an evaluation the therapist does a lot of parent interview and a play based approach with the child to gain an understanding of what the child may or may not be able to do. For Evan's adjusted age, he should have said his first word and doing a lot of babbling. You can go to https://www.asha.org/public/speech/ to find out more information about speech and language.
I suggest you contact other speech therapy offices or other hospitals. UC and Miami U. also have speech therapy for a lower price. GL!
