What do real contractions feel like?

Does it hurt all over? Does it usually start in one place and move around?

I know they get worse and closer together, but do you feel it across your whole belly, is it just at the bottom or just at the top, etc.?

People say, "You'll just know," but I want to know HOW I'll know. SIL said she didn't know right away but went to the hospital just in case. If she would have waited, she would have known for sure, but she didn't initially.

    Mine felt like a lot of pressure down below.  It never moved and I only had it there.  It wasn't painful in the way I thought it would be, it was just a lot of pressure that became unbearable because they came one on top of the other.  I'm a total wimp, and to me it really wasn't all that bad.  It couldn't have been all that bad, since I didn't ask for my epidural until I was at 10 cm.  Just in the nick of time!

    mine started after my water broke and they were pretty intense right away...i couldnt move, it was like a "tightning" feeling that started in my back and went across my lower belly....im not sure how the not so intense ones feel though

    I can't explain how they felt. I think they are different for everyone. But you will know, especially because you will feel the same thing regularly every few minutes. That is how i figured it out

    At first, mine felt like poop pressure - I wasn't sure if I had to go to the bathroom or was having contractions.  Once they started coming on a regular basis, I knew!

    They didn't go away no matter what I did and were worse when I laid down. Also made my lower back ache. Initially felt like bad diarrhea cramps then got to the painful crying stop you from moving cramps.

    Mine just felt like menstrual cramps. ?They started out mild but quickly became like severe cramps. ?
