3rd Trimester

DH asked me if I would be interested in a new car..

and I said UH...YES!

He doesn't like that my car doesn't have anti-lock brakes and we realized that stroller and other stuff doesn't fit into our little cars. He thinks we should be able to pull it off financially easily if we trade in my Honda Civic.

Cars we are considering:

Saturn Vue

Suburu Forrester

Mitsubishi Outlander

Anyone have any of these and can give any input?

We're looking for safety, price, mileage, and storage space.

Re: DH asked me if I would be interested in a new car..

  • I dont have any input on these cars but thats awesome on getting a new car!!!

  • I've heard good things about the Subaru, but I have no first-hand knowledge on any of them.

I hope you're considering buying a used car, there have got to be some really great deals out there. In 2007 we bought a 2005 Audi with only 6,000 miles on it for WAY less than the price of a new one. And with only 6,000 miles it was practically new. Plus, when we drove it off the lot we didn't immediately lose tons of value.

  • We recently got a Ford Escape that we're really happy with, though that's not one of your choices...
  • My neighbor has a Subura Forrester, the style that came out last year I think.  It's really nice and she loves it.  She had an older Forrester and then this one came out so she traded.  Besides look and her loyalty to the brand I really don't know much else.
  • No first hand knowledge with any of them... but I would get the Subaru, hands down!!
  • My mom has an 02 Forrester and loves it. We borrowed it for awhile back in 2005 when my dh was recovering from a car accident and couldn't fit into my car. They are nice and you can fit a lot into the back. If you are looking at a new one I know they have redesigned them so I wouldn't be able to comment on that, but I know they are good cars.

  • I have a Saturn VUE and LOVE it!!  It's a 2003 and I've hardly had any problems with it at all.  And, it's really roomy!  I had to sit in the back seat too since myself and my family(except my mom) are on the tall side.  I'm not too sure about the newer ones though, but mine is FABULOUS!!
  • AWESOME! I'm getting my new one tomorrow-it's sooo exciting! We are getting the Scion XB... wanted something a little bigger but that still got good gas milage.

I know that the Subaru and the Vue are both AWD which is DEFINITELY good if you live somewhere w/ snow. I didn't check before posting, sorry! I think you'll have no prob's trading in the civic either, those are good cars.

  • We just purchased a Volvo xc90.

Love it!  Lots of room for storage and you can't get any safer - plus 4wd is standard on all of them

  • I used to work in auto finance and Mitsubishis lose their value crazy fast (like down 50% the second you drive it off the lot).  I wouldn't buy one.  I've heard pretty good things about Saturns, but of the three types you listed I'd go with Subaru because they hold their value and are well-made.
  • my mom has a Subaru forester and She loves it. I really liked it when I drove it too.

  • We got a Nissan Rogue last summer. Of what you listed, we looked at the Outlander, but some of the controls seemed flimsy to me, but we have friends that just got one and love there's. DH and I are big fans of Nissans and not thrilled with the American car lines, so the Vue was out and there is one Subarau dealership on LI so I have no input on that. All that ramble said, congrats!!
  • I have a Dodge Caliber. I LOVE IT!!!

    1. It has plenty of cargo room for a stroller.

    2. It has stain resistant seats!

    3. You can get one brand new for under $20K (I bought my 2007 in Sept of 2006 and got it out the door for under $17K).

    4. In the glove compartment it has a cooler that will keep 4 20oz bottles at 40degrees....great for bottles on long road trips.

    5. It was rated on of the top family cars in 2008.

Same here -- my lease ran out at the end of December and we ended up getting a minivan to replace it, but as soon as DH finds a new job, we're trading in our Malibu for another Caliber -- I can't say enough good things about it!

  • We test drove Vue's this weekend.  I am super Saturn loyal, and it didn't dissapoint me.  If you get a used Vue (we're looking at 2006/2007's) make sure you get a V6 with the Honda engine (as opposed to the GM engine) and that it doesn't have the CVT.
