Formula for babies that have a hard time pooping

DD has been having problems going to the bathroom for a few weeks now. We have tried a couple different formulas and nothing is helping. She just went after 6 days, and it was very pasty and a very small amount for waiting so long.

If your DC has a hard time going to the bathroom, what formula do you use?

  • Make sure that the measurments on your bottles are correct... DS was having this problem, and then we found that 2 bottles of his where incorrect in their measurements by an ounce. We threw those ones out, but if he's having a little trouble I add .25 oz extra to his bottle and that seems to make it better. We use Enfamil Gentlease.

  • Yeah, it started while she was on the Gentlease and we have tried the extra water trick. We also changed the brand of bottle we were using, and it is still happening.

  • Talk to your dr... they might recommend putting Karo syrup or giving small amounts of apple/pear//prune juice mixed with water. I wouldn't do this until you talked to them though. Constipation is normal for FF babies...

  • DS has problems pooping a lot. We use Similac Sensitive (in the orange can). Although he only gets about two bottles a day, the rest is BM.

Also, our pedi gave us the ok to give him 1/2 juice 1/2 water once a day and that seems to help too. She said he can have as many ounces of juice as months old he is. (So 6 months old, can have 6 oz juice/day.)

  • How long are you trying each formula? It takes about 1/5 to 2 weeks for their bodies to adjust to the formula.

Our ped told us it only takes 2 - 3 days.

She has been on her latest one for 1.5 weeks.

  • We use Similac Advance.  DS has problems pooping too.  He actually poops less (amount, not frequency) and it's less smelly than when he was on Enfamil Gentlease.  He pooped about every 30-36 hours on Enfamil and on Similac we have to give him a tsp of prune juice everyday otherwise he gets constipated.  He goes 30-36 hours now with the prune juice.

  • Formula babies do have a pastier poop than BF babies.  If DS is taking his time pooping, then we give him 1oz of water or prune juice/water mixture.  It works like a charm every time.  I was told by the pediatrician's nurse that baby poop often changes and how often they go changes.
