You can't, they just do. If you're mixing formula in them, you can use a sealing disk, but it is a PITA. I used them for DD#1, not the BPA free ones, and they were great. The new BPA free ones were so awful and leaky. I switched to the Playtex drop-ins when DD#2 was 1 week old.
Good luck, mine always leak. I just try and remember to always keep them upright. I even tried to change bottles but DS wouldn't take a different bottle
This link will show you how to align the nipples and rings so that the bottles don't leak. Ever since we've been doing this we haven't had a leaky bottle since. GL!

we did this and still had leaky bottles. we ended up having to switch, I hope that little trick works for you.
I have thee answer. Not sure how to explain this. Each ring has a little dot on the outside, like a little scratch mark sort of thing. Align one of the 3 airvents with that dot, making sure the other two are covered by the slot inside the ring like that blog says. Screw the lid on and when feeding make sure that the dot on the ring is up... like aligned with their nose. The problem with the leaks is that when they exhale into the bottle, the 'uncovered' airvent lets the milk out. If you keep it skyward, and therefore unable to let milk out... you'll be fine.
I never had a problem w/ them leaking. Just make sure around the bottle is dry, including where you screw on the "lid." And make sure it's screwed on right.
I almost bought the Avent bottles, but after reading revies on BRU.com everyone had the same complaint about them leaking. I ended up going with Dr. Brown's bottles.
Re: avent bottles, ahhhhhh!!!!

It's worked for us for months.
