Babies: 0 - 3 Months

When did your baby first smile in response to you?

I'm seeing people saying that their babies are smiling at them as early as 4 weeks and I've seen pictures of 6 week olds smiling. ?My baby smiles involuntarily but not on purpose yet. ?Should I be concerned? ?

When should they start really connecting and smiling at you?

TIA ?

Re: When did your baby first smile in response to you?

  • Mine was smiling pretty regularly it seems from 1 month (if not earlier). I really don't remember exactly but it seems like she always smiled. I don't know when specifically they "should" smile...might want to check with doc on that motor skill. Smile

  • i have pictures of DD doing it that young cause i got lucky and caught the "smile" she really starting to bust them big out at 2 months and i could on point make her smile in response to something i did more towards 3 months.
  • She was 4 weeks old when she smiled the first time at me. They were much easier to come by when she was around 2 months.  I'm not sure when babies are "supposed" to be smilng by, but I don't think you need to be concerned.

  • He started spontaniously smiling at 7 weeks, and really smiling at me ( like in the morning or b/c of a funny face ) at 11 weeks. It feels like it takes forever but he will get there eventually! I wouldn't be concerned.
  • DS started smiling around 6 weeks. First it was at his mobile, and then over time he started smiling at us.?

Even if your baby is behind on one or two of their milestones, which your baby isn't, it isn't a reason to worry. Some babies are just slower at certain things because they are concentrating on learning something else first; they are learning to do things in a slightly different order. Our doctor said the only thing he worries about during the first few months is if they aren't hitting ANY of their milestones or if they aren't making eye contact by 4 months.

Here is a milestone chart, if you were wondering.

  • I like this website for development milestones. Most babies start smiling around 2-3 months and you shouldn't be concerned. I believe DS smiled voluntarily around 8 weeks.

  • 5 weeks old. Every week she does it a little more.
  • D has smiled since the beginning when he's drifting off to sleep. Like, since we were still in the hospital. But, he JUST started smiling in response to things we do, and it's still pretty rare.
  • 7 weeks.  Iwould not worry.
  • I thought DS was behind, too, but then he started flashing me smiles around 8 weeks. So hang in there! :)

  • DS didn't start smiling at us on a regular basis until he was past 2 months old.  Don't worry, the smiles will come!!
  • DD did it at 4 1/2 weeks, but I wouldn't be worried about it if I were you. They do everything at different times sometimes. ie. DD smiled early, but its still SO hard to get her to giggle, and my friends babies the same age have been doing that a while.

  • I think it was about six weeks. I'd have to consult my baby book to be sure but I do remember the exact moment.
