Hysteroscopy question...

I have a hysteroscopy on Monday to look at a small fibroid.  Any experience? I was wondering what to expect....

Re: Hysteroscopy question...

  • i had one yesterday...It was done in a surgical center...i wasn't able to eat anything from midnight the night before.. I was put under for the procedure so i don't remember any of it...they say the procedure normally takes about 30-45 mins but it took them a little over an hour b/c i had a lot of scar tissue that needed to be removed.

I had mild cramping and bleeding right after the procdure...but they said the cramping was from the balloon that was placed in my uterus...i am sore today but nothing i need to take any meds for.

Let me know if you have any other questions and i will try and answer them as best i can...GL!

  • I had a hysteroscopy in December.  I had a fibroid and polyp removed.  It wasn't too too bad.  I was in and out of the hospital in about 4ish hours.  I really only took anything for pain that day and the following day, but you really do need to rest afterward.  I had it done on Wednesday and on Friday evening went to the store with my mom......and I needed to sit and rest because I was sore.  It was a much better experience than I had prepared myself for.

    Good luck!!!

  • I had two this last year. I was given a twilight sleep at an out patient surgical center for mine. The RE removed a polyp and leveled a fibroid.

There is very little pain when you awake. My legs were slightly sore from being pushed back in stirrups but improved once I was up and moving around. I had a little naseau from the anesthesia, but they gave me meds when I woke. I was instructed to take naproxen for pain relief. I was home around 4 hours later for both. I didn't need to take any pain meds and was awake the rest of the day. The day after the procedure, I was able to take my dog for a short walk. I had minor spotting for a few days. It really is a pretty easy procedure in terms of recovery. GL!

  • I had one along with a laparoscopy three and a half years ago and the recovery was pretty quick. Just make sure you rest the day of and take it easy for the next couple of days. As pp have said, there will be some light spotting for the next day or so and you may feel a little sore, but from what I remember, it was not very painful at all (and I didn't take any paid meds). Hope that helps. Good luck!

  • Like many of the other ladies on here, I had one to remove a fibroid.  Mine was done in a hospital, under IV anethesia.  However, you said yours is just to take a look (not to remove anything?)  I think my RE may do those in the office....and only under twilight sedation.  so, it probably really varies based on what it is for.  However, I wouldn't worry too much, mine was similar to the other descriptions and I was feeling back to normal soon after - I had spotting for about 3-4 days afterwards, which is also completely normal.  Good luck!

  • I'm a Registered Nurse and work in an outpatient surgery center - we do these all the time.  You'll experience some mild abdominal cramping and have some vaginal bleeding, but not more than a normal period.  If you experience any heavy bright red bleeding or passing large clots, you need to call your dr. asap.  Your throat may be a bit sore or scratchy from the breathing  tube, but that will get better in a couple of days.  You won't be able to have sex, douch, or anything vaginally until after your post-op exam, which should occur within 1-2 weeks after your surgery.  You should call for a temperature above 100.5, heavy bleeding, or severe abdominal pain - these would be abnormal and need to seek medical attention.  Usually people do what they want and carry on normal activities after a few days, but it is important to allow for some extra rest - the rule of thumb is "Do what your body tells you to do".

I think that is about it.

    Good luck!
