3rd Trimester

How long should I wait to get essentials?

DH and I decided against a shower and instead are doing a "welcome to the world" party when the baby arrives. We do have a small registry put together for the people who have asked for it, but how long do you think we should wait before getting the essentials ourselves?

Now that we have a scheduled arrival date, I feel like I want to have everything ready, but I also don't want to be running around at the last minute!

Wow I'm really overthinking this aren't I...damn PG brain...

Re: How long should I wait to get essentials?

  • DH and I plan stocking up end of April/beginning of May since I'm due May 31.

  • We have 2 diapers and 1 bottle so far...is that good? lol

My mom has been collecting diapers for awhile for "something" for my shower...

We'll probably start stocking up at the end of the month and continue until she arrives.

  • After our shower, I divided our registry list into things we need before baby arrived and things that could wait.  Last weekend, we went and bought the things we needed before he's born.

  • You should start now. Get it out of the way. You'll feel better once you know you're ready!
  • Well, you'll need a carseat, outfit, and at least one receiving blanket to take the baby home from the hospital. Assuming you'll be breastfeeding until the "shower," you can probably get away with basic layette, diapering supplies, crib/sheets. If not, you'll need at least a couple of bottles and a pump or formula. Depending on how long it will be until the "shower" you may also want a bathtub, first aid kit, and stroller.

I wouldn't list the true "essentials" that you need on day 1 on the registry, because you can't wait until someone buys them and brings them to your shower, and you don't want to have to return duplicate items after the party.

    Did this answer your question?

  • Since we're planning on paying cash for as much as we can, we're buying a little with each paycheck. That way it won't seem like so much right before I'm due.

Also, we're getting things as we see them on sale.

haha kinda, yes. But the party after her birth isn't a shower at all. We havent given out the registry link to many people and don't really plan to. It also doesn't have major essentials on it - just a few "creature comforts" that aren't must-haves for day one.

LOL. Clearly it is time for me to stop bumping for the day, because I'm so confused about what I think is actually a simple question.

I wouldn't wait any more. If we weren't having a shower, I'd be out buying what we need now. If I were you, I'd want at least the essentials by 37 wks, so that I could sleep easy knowing we had what we needed.
