? for those that supplement

DH and I are going to be away from DS for 6 days, he is staying with my parents.  I plan on having enough BM to last him, but in the fear that he will complete gorge himself or something and my step-mom should run out of milk, I also want to introduce formula before I leave, so she doesn't have to deal with the new experience for him.  What formula really is closest to the consistency and taste of BM?

  • I don't think there is a really good answer to that.  It's like asking which diapers are best - everyone has a different response.  :-)

My DD had Similac and Earth's Best as a supplemental formula and did fine on both.  Her first few bottles were mixtures of formula and EBM.  And after that she took the formula straight.  If you aren't expecting to give him a lot of formula I wouldn't overthink it.

  • We supplement slightly with Earth's Best.  I think the texture is most like my breastmilk but I didn't taste it or anything.  We mix the formula with breastmilk.  If you're worried about it, perhaps she could go with breastmilk only until about halfway through them, then start mixing formula and breastmilk in a bottle so she won't have to use a whole bottle of straight formula, which your baby may really not like.

As for him drinking a lot while you're gone, there's a good chance he will drink way more than you expect.  My son drinks a ton of milk every Tuesday at daycare because he had 3 days away from them home with his mom and dad, and he gets a little needy and wants held by the daycare provider and fed.  It's comfort thing.  Without you or your husband, your baby may want to eat more just for comfort.
