Babies: 0 - 3 Months

For those whose LO didn't take the bottle right away...

How long did it take? We've tried every day for a week now and it turns into a screaming fest for an hour. I have DH give her the bottle and sometimes she will take it (along with the screaming) and others she just refuses. Seriously, what if something happened to me and I could no longer feed her? She would need to take the bottle eventually...I'm wondering if I should spend the wknd just giving her the bottle and forcing her - but what if she doesn't eat? It troubles me that I read so much about nipple confusion and once a baby takes the bottle she might not go back to nursing - I have the opposite problem!! I wish she would take the bottle so I could pump and my DH could help me - especially night night every 2 hours. I'm getting exhausted...thank you for letting me vent!!! :)

  • My DS didnt want to take it right away either. We found that if he is hungry enough that he will take it though. So I would make sure that he is really ready to eat and then try. BTW-Im not saying starve your child.Smile

  • I had to be completely out of the house before he would take it. If he could see me, hear my voice, etc., he would not take the bottle.

It could be the nipple you are using too. The playtex nipples worked for us. Also, change between latex and silicone. DS liked latex at first, but then did better with silicone later.

After the first week of daycare, he was doing great taking the bottle, but he was sucking on my boob like he does the bottle, which hurt like hell. He finally got it all straightened out, and we don't have any problems anymore.

  • Try different types of bottles, my friend went through 4 before she found which one her DD would take.  Thank goodness my DD took the first one we tried.  Also does the paci your using have a similar nipple as the bottle.  We use NUK paci's and bottles.
  • We had a major problem with bottle feeding at first too. I didn't have to be out of the house, but I needed to not be in the room. My DH also found that for the moment, it works better if she's in her baby bjorn chair and he "warms" the nipple under hot water before he feeds her. When he tried to hold her, she tried to nurse off of him. Maybe try doing the chair thing?
  • My LO did the same thing. I tried a different bottle with a different nipple and that work. Maybe that will help you.
