Olivia's birth story

I posted her birth story on my blog if anyone would like to read it!

If you read the last paragraph, I could use some nursing advice from any new mommies!

Re: Olivia's birth story

  • Thanks for sharing!  Obviously I have no experience with breastfeeding at all but at our BF class last night our teacher kept saying "if you can get past the first 2 rough weeks, you'll be golden".  So I just wanted to offer encouragement BUT you need to make the best decision for you and Olivia.  It'll all work out no matter how you end up feeding her.  Good luck!

  • Hi, Brandy.  Thanks for sharing your story.

I really don't have any specific BF advice because it didn't necessarily work out for DD and me, other than to say if you really want to do it, keep at it.  Talk to the LC again, try everything she recommends that you feel comfortable doing - maybe even a supplementary nursing system.  The one LC I talked to said you could jerryrig one pretty easily and cheaply until your DD gets the hang of BF'ing.

But if you feel your daughter would be healther switching to formula, you have to do what is best for her.  And don't think that once you put a bottle of formula in her mouth, BF'ing is over - you can keep trying.  If she's not getting enough to eat, that makes BF'ing so much harder, because she's proabably tired, which just starts a nasty cycle (at least it did for us.)

I know there are alot of emotions wrapped up in BF'ing, but one thing to keep in mind (which a LC that I was working with to increase my supply because I pump told me) is that breastfeeding does not equal mothering.  Doing what is best for your child is mothering.   And keeping that in mind really helps me deal with the fact that BF'ing didn't work out for us.

Sorry if this is a book, but as someone who really wished that her DD was EBF, I want to offer you both encouragement to keep trying and also understanding if it doesn't.

  • I'm so happy that she's here!  Congrats!
I'm not sure that I have a lot of advice for nursing.  I think I'd make another appt with the LC.  I always find it helpful to talk with the one I see.  Even if it's just for encouragement and support.  Engorgement was awful.  I heard that pumping a little can help get them latched on easier if you're engorged.
Do whatever you think is best for you & Olivia.  Good luck!!
