Baby Names

Anyone having a "junior"? If so...

... what are you naming him? And how to do you plan to differentiate between the babe and your man?

For us, if it's a boy, our first son will be Troy Lovell (after my FI, and partially after his grandfather, the son of a former slave). It's pretty rich history, and I'm happy to continue it.

I'm just curious if anyone is "stuck" with a family name...

Re: Anyone having a "junior"? If so...

  • My brother is a junior (dad and bro are both John), but my Dad goes by Jack and my brother by John. I think most people probably use a nn to differentiate. Although, I can't really think of a nn for Troy!

  • So funny- I've suggested Ty a couple of times, but I think the FI is really set on him being called Troy, as well. It'll get confusing, I know, but really, what can I do? I love the name, and I truly respect the FI's opinion... doesn't mean that a woman can't change a man's mind, eventually! Wink
  • My DH is the 4th.  I'm not a fan of his name (given name is Joel, he goes by Jay) and I don't want to give our kids the pressure of continuing the name.  It doesn't help that we live 2 minutes from the ILs and often get mail/calls for him.

  • my husband is a SECOND.  and there is pressure from his entire family to have a THIRD.  ew...  i'm not a fan.  the name is Richard.  his dad is Richard, my DH is Rick...so what would we call the III...??  ***!!??  um..no way!

  • My DH is the III

They all have their "legal" name (that NONE of them use) and they all go by the same NM.  Strange.

So if they (all three) are in a room it is:

    Henry Sr. (grandpa)

    Big Henry (FIL)

"your" Henry (my DH) (and they just point to me...)

    so odd.

My fingers and toes are crossed the DH doesn't feel the need to continue this madness.

I'm in the same boat!  Douglas Franklin.  FIL just decided he was so awesome he should have a namesake and create a dynasty of Douglas Franklin's.  FIL is Doug, DH is Dougie (to his family)...there are no nn left!  DH and I have decided not to do this, we just don't know how to tell FIL.  However, I think in the situation of rich history and when you don't hate the name, use it.  How often do you call your husband by his name?  I only call mine Doug when there are other people around, and when FIL is around I'm at a loss.  I get too confused and have never called either one of them by their name when they're together- I just go for eye contact.  But if your husband is "Honey" to you then Troy is perfectly viable for your son.  Other family can call him "little Troy" or something like that.  It might be a little annoying to him as he grows but that's not the group of people you're around all the time.  Of course, I don't plan to take my own advice, but as I said it's just FIL's name, not 5 generations harkening back to a former slave!  That's some mighty rich history and should be thought very hard about before being cast aside (which I realize you don't plan to do).  But my FIL is pretty much a jerk and only calls DH when he needs something (usually money or a ride) and so we don't feel the need to honor him like that.

  • My paternal grandpa's name was John Raymond....my dad is John Rodney and has been called Rodney by family members since he was born to aleviate confusion. My brother is a 'second' and he's been Johnny from day one (he's almost 18 now lol).

DH wants our first DS to be a junior - Andrew Joseph. DH goes by Andy...I want to call futureDS Andrew but DH thinks it's too formal for a little guy and wants him to be called Andy as well. :)

I love Trey and Trip for a III!

DH is a third also...he goes by Trey. I feel like we should continue the name also, but his name is Harry Edward (last name is a fruit). Sooo, technically he is Harry (fruit) which is just sad to me and there are no good nicknames for a fourth. DH seems to think Ivey would work but I think that is too girly for a boy. So, I think we would do Harrison Edward, which I can totally live with =) ?
