Any experience with enlarged kidneys at big u/s?

I am stepping over from 2nd tri to see if any of you have any experience with this situation...we had our first big u/s a month ago. ?At that time, the baby wasn't very cooperative, so we weren't able to get many measurements. ?However, one that we did get was the kidneys. ?Both were mildly enlarged and the doctor said they would check them again at our next appointment. ?That appointment was today. ?One of the kidneys was back to normal while the other was still mildly enlarge. ?It hadn't gotten any larger, but it didn't go down either. ?They are going to check it again in 4 weeks. ?Both the tech and the doctor did not seem very concerned, but it's hard to hear that something is not normal. ?Does anyone have any experience with this? ?TIA!

  • I did, and my doctor did not seem overly concerned, either.  Of course I asked "worse case scenario" and she told me that it would be a routine surgery after birth if they remained enlarged.  She sent me for a Level II ultrasound, and when I went for that both were down.  The doctor at the hospital who performed the level II said that the previous u/s could have been performed when they were full, hence the enlargement.

    Good luck.  :)

  • Yup, happened to me too. Apparently it's not uncommon in pregnancy for this to happen. I wouldn't worry about it.

Our baby has had numerous ultrasounds because of this same reason. I am not sure what you are having but I do know that it is really common in boys.  On Monday we had our second level II u/s and the specialist is pretty confident it is hydronephrosis. (google it) At the first visit he thought it was Polycystic Kidney Disease but a further look indicated fluid is just backing up into the kidneys. The ureters (sp) have a kink that is making urine back up into his kidneys which makes them enlarged. Most babies grow so fast that the kink straightens itself but otherwise I was ensured it is a very routine procedure. I am not a doctor, but I hope I helped. Good luck.

  • Same thing happened to my SIL...We even had to go to a specialist... and she has to be delivered at a high risk hospital with a team of specialists on hand- and when my nephew was born... He was perfectly healthy... Almost 5 years later- it's all a memory. We will never forget the scare, but everything turned out a-ok!

  • We are having this issue now.  I actually had a level II ultrasound today and it appears that our little boy also has Hydronephrosis. This means that not all of the fluid is being drained from his kidney into his bladder. (we are only seeing the problem in one kidney)  The specialist we spoke with didn't seem to concerned and said that at worst case scenario our baby would need a stint after he was born to fix the kink. After he is born and before he leaves the hospital he will have an ultrasound done to see if the problem fixed itself (most of the time the problem will go away once the baby pees after he is born).  My doctors concern was my amniotic fluid level.  The fluid expelled from the babys bladder is what helps create the amniotic fluid and the less fluid coming from the bladder the less fluid there is surrounding the baby.  I have a follow up ultrasound in 4 weeks to see if we still have the same problem.
  • Thank you for all of the feedback! ?We are having a girl, so I know there can be a difference in what the issue might be as compared to boys. ?I guess all we can really do is wait and see what happens!

  • We had the same issue at our 18 week ultrasound a couple of weeks ago - too much urine accumulating in the kidneys and too little amniotic fluid.  We went in for a follow up ultrasound this week, and not much had changed, so we go in again in 3 weeks.  My doctor does not seem too concerned either - it's fairly common and usually resolves itself.  If it doesn't, she said it's very treatable.  I'm trying to stay positive and just be happy that this means more chances to see the kiddo in ultrasounds and that everything will be just fine!
