? For Mommies

So, while my DS naps, he wakes up SCREAMING!  Not just crying, but screaming...only during his naps during the day.  I don't know why. he rarely cries...but he does do this usually at least once a day

I am wondering if it's night terrors...but I thought he was a little young for that...but even if i pick him up right when he starts i can't calm him down...he has to calm down first...sometimes he goes right back to sleep

anyone else have this happen??  what did you do??  why is he doing this??

Re: ? For Mommies

  • DS did this at night a couple times when he was as young as yours.  There was nothing we could do to help him.  He sounded terrified and screamed like it and more.  We just rocked him walking around for a few minutes and talked as calmly as possible and then when he started to calm I'd nurse him to help ease any further discomfort plus my own.  It always made me want to cry when I heard him like that.  I'm tearing up just thinking about it.  I hope your DS has sweeter dreams soon.

  • Hmmm... You should pick up Ferber's book - he has a section on night terrors - I *thought* it usually happened later in LO's sleep cycles, but I'm not positive, and it may be different with naps.

  • I totally was thinking this, but it is the opposite for us. ?Only at night. ?Naps he is fine. ?So I am wondering if he is starting to have bad dreams, issues with the dark, etc. ?NOTHING will calm him some nights

  • When mine does that (and it did start suddenly), it was usually related to him needing to burp (very suddenly, I guess). Because I'd pick him up and usually between the movement of picking him up and some comforting pats on the back, he'd burp and then pass out again.

    Good luck!
