Anyone pump and drive?

I know some women that have done this.  I'm thinking about giving it a shot.  It would save me so much time and I'd be able to pump more often.

  • Kel716 is the expert on pumping and driving! I've done it once, and I'm not very good at it :)

  • I do it every day. I also pump in the car at work.  So I have all my supplies right on the passenger seat.  I have a hands free bra, a couple receiving blankets.  I get all hooked up before putting my seat belt on.  Make sure stuff is "right" and then go.  It is great!

  • Personally, I would never do this... sounds like an accident waiting to happen.

    ditto this.

why risk an accident for the sake of saving time?

  • I've done this, twice now. Most recently yesterday. I don't think it's a distraction driving if you have a handsfree bra and are willing to keep in one until you can turn it off when you are stopped.

I wouldn't make it a habit but I think it is a time saver!

  • I have a few times.  Just one side, and I'll hold the pump against me until my next stop because I don't want to be distracted driving and trying to avoid spilling milk on my pants.  I could never get the hands free bra to work.  For some reason I always had spilling issues.  But I've done it.  It did save a ton of time when I was pumping all the time.  On the flip side, I pumped almost every time my husband was driving us somewhere that was at least 20 minutes away.  He got so used to me pumping in his passenger seat.
  • I do on occasion.  I love it.

  • It is on my "schedule" of pumping for when I return to work, but haven't tried it yet.  I will give it a trial run before I commit to that schedule, but it will certainly help to be able to pump and drive.  I don't know why it would distract - have a hands-free bra and a nursing cover... we'll see.
  • Aww, thanks jersey!  Yes, I do this all the time.  DH thought I was nutso when I first mentioned it, until I showed him how it would work and he rode with me.  I pump anywhere from 1-4 times/day in my car.  (I EP).  I spend a TON of time driving, and it really is the biggest reason I've been able to EP for 7+ months.  It is by far my biggest time saver of the day.  IMHO, talking on a cell phone and driving is way more dangerous as it's usually not hands free, or you have to pick it up to answer it, hang up, etc...

I get everything hooked up and working before I start my car moving.  I am able to have 2 hands on the wheel at all times.  I do have a hands free bra (actually a few so I can rotate during the week).  I have a car adapter for my PISA, and a hooter hider.  I check my progress when I'm at stop lights, and I have only ever "overflowed" once.  I know about how much I'm going to get when I am driving at the various times during the day, so I make sure my bottle is bigger.  Once my confidence increased in my pumping & driving abilities, I have learned how to unhook while moving (but I didn't for a long time).  I leave a cupholder and part of my console open for my 2 pumping bottles.  If I have an issue, I pull into a parking lot and fix it.  (eg, I had an issue with a membrane yesterday and I pulled into the CVS parking lot and fixed it, hooked back up, and went on my way).

Anyway... it really is a HUGE time saver, and with it being hands free I feel safe driving.  page me if you have any other questions about it.
