ok- so I met with my RE last week and he told me I can start ttc now or continue on my plan to stay on bcp for 6 months. He prescribed me metformin and I have been on it for a week now.
My dilemma is this. I planned to wait to ttc until August hoping that the bcp would calm my ovaries, the met could do its thing and I can get pg right away. DD would be turning 4 when #2 is born. Its a bigger age gap than I would like, but what can I do?
Im getting antsy. I really want to just throw the bcp out the window after this cycle (#2) and start ttc. I called the RE to see what the next step is, but figured I would ask you girls too.
When you started to ttc, what was the protocol? He suggested Clomid first, so what does that entail? Do I have to go in for ultrasounds etc to check for ovulation or is it just a wait and see kind of thing? What did your RE do?
Re: pcos question
Well I have PCOS and bc doesn't help....I mean it helps while I am on it but nothing changes once I go off. So from my point of view I wouldn't stay on bc for 6months hoping it's going to make it easier for you to conceive later. (but I am no Dr!)
I started with Clomid as well. It is just a pill you take for 5 days during your cycle. They should monitor you while you are on it. I would have bloodwork day 3 for baseline #'s then ultrasound around day 13 and sometimes a trigger shot too. Then blood work again on day 21 to confirm that I ovulated.
Good luck!
just got off the phone with the Re nurse. She said the bcp pill can fix things in one month, and really doing 6 doesnt matter. she did want me to give the metformin a month to fully kick in, so I am finishing this pill pack and doing one more. that way the met has almost 2 full months.
she said to call when im ready and they will prescribe the clomid. i take it, do the opks, and hope it works. they dont monitor unless i dont get a positive surge on the opk by cd 15. (strange?) i have an appt at the end of this pill pack to test my hormones etc.
im so excited that I have a plan in place!
An RE office doesn't monitor on Clomid? That would concern me... Clomid stimulates your ovaries... it shouldn't be taken lightly in my opinion. I would personally ask to be monitored.
My bloodwork always indicated I O'd on Clomid but I have never once gotten a positive opk... the monitoring isn't just to check that you O'd...it's also to make sure your ovaries aren't going too crazy or developing cysts or anything...
For me, BC didn't do squat besides regulate my period while I was on it. I have PCOS as well and I don't O on my own.
Ditto CHI on how it works and that you have to be monitored. I was rushed to the ER for a burst cyst on one of my unmonitored clomid cycles. That wasn't fun.
Just a heads up on the OPK's. If you read the leaflet that comes with it it says that taking clomid can give you an incorrect result. It's true. I have never gotten a positive OPK and I know it's happened to many other women. You shouldn't be using that as your only indication that you are going to O. You need to be monitored and I would insist on it.
Good luck!
hmm, that concerns me. i asked her about monitoring so i can plan around work a bit. they are they only RE practice here, so I will make sure they monitor.
what is normal? bloodwork on CD3, then ultrasounds when?
