Should we wait to buy our breastpump?

We are going to try to breastfeed. I do plan on returning to work in August, so if breastfeeding I will of course need a pump. My question is should we get it now using the gift cards we received from our shower or wait until we know if we will be successful breastfeeding? This may seem like a silly question, but I know some people purchase theirs before LO arrives. TIA

Re: Should we wait to buy our breastpump?

  • I would wait and just rent a hospital pump until you know BFing will work for you.  GL!

  • We rented ours from the hospital.  You may want to check into that before purchasing one.  Just a suggestion only because I began to not lactate about 1 week ago and now we can return the pump to the hospital.
  • if you buy it, dont open it and save the receipt

  • Set up a rental at the hospital. You DEF want to have one as soon as you go home for so many reasons.
  • I bought mine before and I am glad i did. I had BF issues and use my pump daily. I am getting back to BF, but still pump to try and up my supply. If you know you will be going to work and plan to still give BM then you are going to need a pump anyways.?

You could just hang onto your gift cards until after your LO arrives and then buy one when you need to go back to work if BF works for you from the get go. ?

  • i was so glad to have my pump when i got home from the hospital b/c i was SO engorged i needed the relief. you can also start building your freezer stash right away. i went into BFing with a really optomistic frame of mind and we have had a great experience. buy the pump, and you can always return it as long as its unopened, and that way you have it if you need it.

  • I bought the Lansinoh and used it for a whopping 4 days.  I was having supply issues and based on the rec of my LC I rented a Medela hospital grade pump.  She said the Lansinoh would be useful when my supply was established, but that I needed a hospital grade one to help me get there.  Paid $60 for a month.  I ended up throwing in the towel after that.  I now give my pregnant girlfriends the advice to have all the info ready on the easiest way to rent one before the baby comes - that way you can get it as fast as possible and then you can determine if buying one is what is best.

Yes Yes Yes! I had to run out and buy one the morning after my milk came in. I thought I'd have more time before I needed one...but the engorgement was so bad my DH and I made an emergency trip to BRU. Rent/buy, whatever, just have one for when you come home.

  • While we were in the hospital we used one that they rented out and our hospital actually sells the Medela ones so we bought one before we left.  We would not have made it at home without it.  I am so thankful we had it because I pumped a lot those first few weeks after DS was born!
