Pumping Moms come in...

How do you handle pumping while you are alone with DC? Caleb has some fussy periods each day where he wants to be held, so I can't really pump when he is like that. Do I just pump a few minutes, then tend to him and continue? It seems like this should be easy to figure out...

  • Do you have a swing?  I didn't at first but around 6 weeks I went and bought one.  DD liked to be held all the time but once I got the swing I was able to get a break.  I would put her in it and sit in front of her.  I would pump with 1 hand (I have a single pump) and play with her with a toy or something with the other.  I would also put her in her bouncy seat sometimes to pump.  When she got older I put her in her jumparoo.  Now I only pump once a day and that's while I'm feeding her her breakfast (pureed fruit or whatever).

  • Oh, and didn't you say you got a hospital pump?  When I had that I could pump FAST.  Seriously, it didn't take long at all.  I loved it so much I wish I had bought a used one off ebay instead of the Medela Swing (and then just re-sell it later).

  • I put her in the bouncy right next to me so I can replace the paci or bounce her a little extra and that seems to work.
  • Katie was like that too. Her butt was in my lap and then I'd use pillows to hold up her head and upper back and I'd kinda pump right over her.

  • You could invest in a hands free pumping bra, or go to the kelly mom website, they have instructions for how to do hands free yourself, and it works pretty well. ?If you can do the hands free pumping and hold him at the same time you will actually increase the milk production, at least thats what I was told. ?

    Good luck!?

  • I try to pump when my baby is sleeping.  If he is awake I try to do it when he seems most content.  I'll pull him as close to me as possible and just keep popping in the pacifier.  My sessions are 15-20 minutes and so far it's worked out okay.
  • I would also put him in his papasan seat if he was awake when I pumped. Also as he got a lil older I could feed him his bottle while he laid in his papasan seat and pump. I also used to sit on the floor while he laid on his tummy and played. Now he's pretty good at holding his bottle while laying in his papasan seat so we do that in the mornings and then usually during the day he's in his jumperoo or exersaucer cuz hes too mobile to be on the floor when i pump.. At nite im able to do it when he goes to bed.
