Moms of 8-12 monthers

Do you still rock DC to bed? ?We've always given T her last bottle, then rock her to sleep. ?It usually takes between 2-10 minutes, depending on how tired she is. ?I'm wondering if I am creating a bad habit, by not letting her fall asleep on her own. ?Thoughts?

  • She's rocked while she has her bottle, but she's usually still awake a little bit before I put her to bed.  She loves to be cuddled, but when it's time for sleep my little girl needs to be in bed - she is a lone sleeper.  Can you make any adjustments so that she's drowsy when you put her down, and then falls completely asleep when you lay her down?

  • DH puts DD to bed 90% of the time. He dances with her and then puts her down before she falls asleep. He was putting her down asleep, but then if she woke up in the middle of the night, she wouldn't go back to sleep for me. She had to have daddy dance her to sleep. We ended up doing Ferber to break that habit.?
Does she have to have you rocking her to put her back to sleep if she wakes up in the middle of the night?

You know, I may try that tomorrow. ?Actually, tonight, I rocked her, and as soon as I stood up, she opened her eyes. ?I put her to bed, and she was crawling, getting ready to stand up, and I just left the room. ?A few minutes later I went back to check on her, because I fully expected her to be standing and crying (and she wasn't), and she was konked out. ?I guess that is good??

No, she RARELY wakes up during the night, but if she does, I just go in, cover her up and rub her back for a few minutes. She will normally fall right back to sleep.?

  • I bet you are ok then, but I would continue to put her down just like you did tonight, slightly awake just to be safe.

Yep, that's very good, and like avz said, do the same thing tomorrow and pretty soon she'll get used to it and will be able to put herself to sleep.  My bad is that I started the paci habit with her, so I've got to start weaning her away from those.  It's cute when she picks one up and puts it in her mouth herself though, she's very serious about it, hee.  :)

  • Gavin is still rocked to sleep every night and I was wondering the same thing the other day. He's almost one and I think I need to start working on him being able to soothe himself to sleep. If he wakes up after I lay him down, he has to be rocked back to sleep. I am seriously considering investing in Dr Ferber's book. I kinda hate the fact that I won't be rocking him to sleep but I also know that he needs to learn how on his own.
  • Thanks ladies, great advice. ?We'll try the drowsy but awake and get her used to it. ?

Creamy - we use a paci at night too. ?She's funny about hers, while rocking, she'll pull it out of her mouth and put it in mine or DH's (backwards) and giggle, then grab it and put it back in her mouth. ? Silly girl.

  • No rocking here.  We did when they were little but quit @ about 3 months.  Now we do bottles in the living room with the lights dimmed while DH and I watch some TV (nothing violent or loud!).  Then they get put in 1 crib for a book and then into separate cribs for sleep.

Since DH has been working a ton of hours, I'm actually glad we are out of the rocking habit since it's nearly impossible to rock 2 and then try to get up with them and put them in their cribs without them waking up!

  • Um we are trying to break the habit now, yes horrible I know that we have rocked her every night to sleep, but that was the only time she would let me cuddle her. The past week or so though once she is done with her bottle and a little drowsy we have been laying her down. Some nights she falls right to sleep and others we have to go in a couple times to lay her down, rub her back, etc.

  • We've never rocked Jared to bed at night, however, I have allowed the bad habit of napping in the swing.  Now if I want him to nap in his crib during the day (which I'm not trying THAT hard to do), I have to rock him.
