Inexpensive ways to decorate

Ok. I need some ideas about how to inexpensively decorate a nursery. The room looks totally naked and I don't want to put too much time and effort in decorating because I may be moving back East after the baby is born. What are some small things I can do that can be easily packed and shipped if necessary???

Re: Inexpensive ways to decorate

  • Dollar store frames and cool cut-outs of interesting graphics from magazines or pics of family.

  • Wall decals (I've heard etsy.com is a good place to find some) are a great way to add decor without painting and they can usually be removed and taken with you if you relocate.

Otherwise, lamps, artwork (many people paint their own on small canvases from the craft store), and a fun area rug if you find a good deal on one (try eBay or the clearance section of many baby-stores, including Pottery Barn Kids)

  • i don't know if this is much help, but the bedding we got came with a valance. we didn't use it and instead i used it on top of a bookcase in there to add some personality to it. it actually looks cute on there and it goes along with the theme.

i also got an organizer for the closet that you just hang right up on the posts which is working pretty well too.

  • Old calendars make good, inexpensive wall art.

Paper lanterns are cheap and collapse for shipping.

  • You could make your own curtain valance and lampshade.  I got an adhesive lampshade from JoAnn Fabrics and it was $12 and you cut your fabric of choice, stick it on, and glue the edges under.  It took me a half hour or so.  You could also paint then stencil on the walls.
  • Along the lines of pp - A couple of the cards I got at my shower are really really cute and don't have a ton of writing all over the front - I want to put these in little frames and hang on the wall.  I have one in particular with this adorable rocking horse that will look so cute on the wall in the nursery.
  • For the walls in our nursery, I took pictures of each of our pets and used picnik.com to make them look like watercolor paintings, then got them printed out by CVS for like, 20 cents each and framed them in cheap frames I found at Wal-Mart.
  • I painted a tree on my daughter's wall... here is a picture.  I had the left over paint from when we painted my son's room... so the only cost that I had was the transparency from Kinkos which was only about $2.00 (I projected the image on the wall and traced it then painted).

You could also buy a few yards of some fabrics that compliment the colors of your nursery and frame them & hang them on your wall.  Super cheap and easy to ship!

  • What great ideas guys!! Thank you so much!!
  • How about the letters hung with ribbon?  The letters are about a dollar each at JoAnn's, and it's just a matter of finding ribbon you like and hot gluing it to the back of each letter.

Also, I made a french memo board -- you can google for directions, but it's just an art canvas, a roll of batting, some ribbon, buttons, and fabric, all put together using hot glue and a little bit of sewing.  You can make it as big or small as you want.  I'm going to stick notes and pics of family into mine.
